Report: Samsung plans to stick a fingerprint reader under the Galaxy S10’s display

Samsung’s Galaxy S10 could finally introduce a fingerprint reader under the display. But to do so, Samsung might sacrifice a series staple: the iris scanner. Korean publication The Bell reports that Samsung has not requested Iris scanners from its usual suppliers. Instead, the company will use a fingerprint scanner under the display, as we’ve started to see from the likes of Vivo. Samsung is also expected to use some form of facial recognition, and is considering using a 3D-sensing camera like Apple’s Face ID. This would provide higher security than traditional method’s that only use the front-facing camera, but it…

Hotels are still tripping over themselves to offer free goodies to fake influencers

Jun25

Brands and businesses everywhere are starting to adopt new forms of advertising that involve partnering with so-called “influencers” on social media. But how willing are they to vet the actual accounts on whom they spend hundreds of dollars? Apparently not much — even when the account in question is an obvious fake. Mediakix, a company that has made multiple dummy accounts on Instagram, emailed several hotels and restaurants, asking if they’d be willing to offer free stuff in exchange for a post. None of them apparently caught onto the account being a fake. How obvious is obvious? Mediakix’s “wanderingggirl” account,…

Mini-rant: What’s the point of Android P’s new gestures?

Jun25

When Google first introduced navigation gestures with the Android P beta, I applauded the move. It was a long overdue evolution of the old-school Android navigation buttons. But now that I’ve spent over a month with the Android P, the experience has soured some. I still think gestures are the way forward, but Google’s implementation has in some ways complicated multi-tasking rather than improved it. First, the thing that prompted me to write this post: Google made activating split-screen mode more tedious. In Android Oreo, there were two easy ways of accessing split screen. You could long press an app…

Reddit’s adding a News tab, and as usual, the community isn’t happy

Jun25

Reddit recently revealed its plans to build a dedicated news section on its site — and already the community is pushing back against the change. Reddit announced the News tab beta last week (the alpha was available for a while before that), along with details about how it was planning to integrate into the core Reddit experience. The tab will be a landing for content surfaced from news-based communities around the site — though Reddit has yet to specify which subreddits in particular. Users can filter their news by various subtopics, from the broad to the specific — for example,…

Review: RHA’s new wireless earbuds deliver impressive audio performance for just $70

Jun25

Scottish audio manufacturer RHA today announced its latest headphones: the RHA MA390 Wireless. These Bluetooth buds are the cheapest in RHA’s wireless lineup, retailing at £59.99 (€69.95, $69.95 in Europe and the US respectively), and are derived from the existing (and excellent) wired RHA MA390 headphones. RHA seeded TNW with a pair last week, and we’re pretty impressed. The MA390 Wireless represent great value for money, with solid performance for the price point. Oh, and they look quite nice too. Design The MA390 Wireless follows the same tried-and-tested design cues left by its pricier older sibling, the MA650 Wireless. As…
