Venezuela will use its shady oil-backed cryptocurrency to fund housing for homeless

Spend any reasonable amount of time delving into cryptocurrencies and sooner or later you’ll read something like: “together it is possible to build history, we are at the technological forefront of the world,” or “today, a cryptocurrency is being born that can take on Superman.” Usually, it’s a fresh-faced, eager team of international software developers and entrepreneurs hyping up their revolutionary tokenizing blockchain set for alpha release in 2022. Those quotes, though, come from Nicolás Maduro – notoriously hardline ruler of Venezuela – who revealed plans to launch the country’s first national cryptocurrency Petro back in February. Now, in July,…

Consider yourself lucky if you happen to be studying machine learning, data science, business intelligence, or any other field that relates to AI. Volvo has unveiled M, a new brand for its upcoming car-sharing service that will debut in Sweden and the US next year. The company says that M will be supported by an app with “proprietary learning technology that asks users about their specific needs instead of merely informing them where they can pick up a car.” It’s not exactly starting from scratch, though: Volvo says it’s working with Sunfleet, a car-sharing firm in Sweden that’s been around for 20 years. It’ll be integrated into M next year. With that, Volvo is the latest firm to join the ranks of automakers…

Baidu’s self-driving buses will hit Japan’s streets next year

While the likes of Tesla, Uber, and Waymo grab most of the headlines in Western media when it comes to autonomous vehicle tech, Baidu is worth tracking too. The Chinese tech giant just saw its 100th self-driving bus roll off the production line this week, and it’s set to roll them out in China and Japan soon. The 14-seater Apolong mini-bus features Level 4 autonomy, which means it can operate without a human driver behind the wheel in specific conditions and within geo-fenced areas. They’ll soon begin plying in cities in China including several Chinese cities including the capital of…
