Startups! Here’s what you need to know before taking on Asia

Once your startup has taken off in your local market, expanding geographically is a natural next step. Asia is likely to be on your target list given its promising consumer market that comprises a burgeoning middle-class with a high spending power, as well as increasing mobile and internet connectivity. I’ve seen startups going down this path but risks that emerge in Asia can prove to be a deal-breaker if not managed from the onset. Cultural risk Asia comprises over four billion people. It’s a diverse region with multiple languages and various preferences. One case in point is the varied preference…

Apple and BlackMagic’s new eGPU is the quiet solution to your MacBook’s lame graphics

Jul12

Apple’s computers have never exactly been known for their graphics prowess, but the last year or two the company has taken the opportunity to improve its standing with official support for external GPUs connected via Thunderbolt 3. Fresh from releasing newly updated MacBooks, the company has collaborated with film hardware company Blackmagic on a $699 eGPU. Before you scoff at the price, there’s one difference compared to other eGPU solutions: this one actually includes the graphics card. Specifically, the Blackmagic eGPU comes with a Radeon Pro 580 sporting 8GB of memory, which is roughly equivalent to an Nvidia 1060. In…

Facebook’s ‘trustworthy’ news is mostly Anderson Cooper and Fox News

Jul12

Facebook this week unveiled the schedule for its funded news shows, and it could use a little diversity — the entire slate is dominated by two shows. I really hope you like Anderson Cooper and/or Fox News, because both of those combined take up about 80 percent of the schedule — Fox News in particular is on every single day of the week. There are shows from the likes of Buzzfeed, Mic, and Telemundo sprinkled in between them. This doesn’t mean the slate is bad (though I think I’ll have reached my Shepard Smith saturation point within two hours of his weekday…

Scientists genetically modified gerbils to hear light through an implant

Jul12
by Sindy Cator on July 12, 2018 at 3:46 pm
Posted In: Around the Web

A team of German scientists recently developed a spectacular new cochlear implant that uses light to simulate sound. So far it’s only been tested on gerbils, but the results are promising. Cochlear implants are a decades-old invention that uses electricity to stimulate or bypass deadened auditory nerves in order to trick the brain into “hearing” something. Many people who suffer hearing loss use these implants to restore at least some of their ability to experience sounds. The problem with the traditional cochlear implant is that electricity isn’t as nuanced as audio waves, which makes it a relatively poor replacement. Light,…

Blackmailers threaten to leak users’ masturbation vids unless they pay Bitcoin ransom

Jul12

It seems the cryptocurrency community is under threat of widespread crypto-blackmail, so take caution. Cornell University computer science professor Emin Gün Sirer has shared an email that appears to leverage leaked passwords to swindle Bitcoin out of unsuspecting victims, demanding they pay a ransom. After weaving an obviously fake, but plausible, scenario describing the Mr Robot-esque ability to record your screen and webcam output during some, uh, private meditation – the email threatens to send recordings of you getting down with ya big bad self to friends and family. Here’s a new form of cryptoblackmail. A friend received this out…
