Scientists determine ‘shooter bias’ extends to black robots

An international team of researchers recently conducted a series of experiments to determine if humans are more likely to fire a weapon at a machine that’s racialized as a black robot than one that looks white. Much like the doll experiments conducted by Kenneth and Mamie Clark in the 1940s, the researchers’ work was designed to determine if socially inherit racial bias exists in human’s perception of an object which, by its very nature, cannot actually have a race. Unfortunately, while many things have changed since then, some truly awful things haven’t. In order to test how people subconsciously view…

Twitter to place new restrictions on its API to stop abuse

Twitter has announced it’s tightening control over its API in order to protect the platform from spam and abuse. The Twitter API allows third-party developers to build software that interacts with the service. Starting from today, anyone who wishes to access it will face a stricter and more thorough vetting process, in order to weed out bad actors. Applicants will first have to register on Twitter’s developer portal. During this process, they’ll be asked to provide detailed information on how they plan on using Twitter’s API. Any application that doesn’t conform with the site’s strict terms of service will be…

Not even shirtless Jesus gets a pass on Facebook’s anti-nudity policy

Take, for example, “The Descent from the Cross” by Flemish master Peter Paul Rubens, which shows Jesus being lifted gently to the ground after his crucifixion. According to Artsy, the painting appeared in an ad campaign for Flanders alongside those of other Flemish artists. Apparently such an image of tragedy, kindness, and dark beauty was altogether too much for Facebook.…

Jul24
by Sindy Cator on July 24, 2018 at 4:57 pm

Microsoft yesterday announced the release of Quantum Katas, a self-paced programming project that teaches developers how to write code for quantum computers. Quantum Katas, as the name implies, are coding katas from Microsoft that teach beginning developers the fundamentals of the company’s quantum computer programming language called Q#. The best part about the exercises: they’re free and open source. According to a Microsoft blog post: Each kata offers a sequence of tasks on a certain quantum computing topic, progressing from simple to challenging. Each task requires you to fill in some code; the first task might require just one line,…
