Ford announced yesterday that it’s spinning off its self-driving efforts into a standalone company in the US: Ford Autonomous Vehicles LLC. The new firm will be tasked with overseeing development of self-driving tech in Detroit, Michigan, as well as running a network of autonomous vehicles once it launches in 2021. It’ll be supported by a total of $4 billion in funding over the next five years, which includes $1 billion that Ford is investing in Argo AI, a self-driving tech company based in Pittsburgh. That should give Ford a chance to compete against the numerous other companies – including tech…

John McAfee is back to putting his money where his mouth is – and goddamn – is it a lot of money. He says that he’ll give $100,000 to anyone who can break into the ‘Bitfi’ wallet, the supposedly ‘unhackable’ cryptocurrency storage device he has been parroting about on social media of late. For all you naysayers who claim that “nothing is unhackable” & who don’t believe that my Bitfi wallet is truly the world’s first unhackable device, a $100,000 bounty goes to anyone who can hack it. Money talks, bullshit walks. Details on https://t.co/ATFaxwUzQC — John McAfee (@officialmcafee) July 24,…

This UX researcher reveals how to spot a liar

I pay people to talk to me. As a researcher, I typically study a particular product or a particular industry, so I need to find people who have bought that product or who shop in that industry. Then, that person has to agree to take time out of their busy day to have a video call with me or meet me in person at a research facility. The details vary from project to project, but to get anyone to talk, I have to compensate them for their time, cover their transportation costs, and try my best to make the whole…

The Motiv Ring fitness tracker now plays nice with Android phones

Looks like we might have the Midas touch, but, you know, in a good way. Hot on the heels of our Motiv Ring review, the company has released an Android version of the app that connects to the device. As its name somewhat implies, the Motiv Ring is a fitness tracker that is also… a ring. Due to its small size and lack of a screen though, it’s heavily reliant on its app to be useful, meaning a swathe of phone owners were unable to use the gadget. The company states that porting the app to Android was the number one…

What Hollywood gets right and wrong about hacking

Jul25

Catherine Flick, De Montfort University Spoiler warnings for Mr. Robot, Arrow, and Blackhat… Technology is everywhere we look, so it’s no surprise that the films and TV we enjoy are similarly obsessed. That’s not to say they manage to get it right when it comes to portraying tech accurately however – and one of their worst areas is computer hacking. I’ve been a Linux system administrator in and out of industry for 20 years. That means I ensure all kinds of internet services such as email, websites and news systems run smoothly, and preferably don’t get hacked. My current job…
