John McAfee’s ‘unhackable’ Bitcoin wallet got hacked

John McAfee threw down the gauntlet last week when claiming his newly-created Bitcoin wallet, Bitfi, was “unhackable.” It took security researchers less than a week to hack it. As of yesterday, a Dutch security researcher known as “OverSoft” claimed to have root access to McAfee’s unhackable wallet. In a tweet, the researcher(s) said: Short update without going into too much detail about BitFi: We have root access, a patched firmware and can confirm the BitFi wallet still connect[s] happily to the dashboard. There are NO checks in place to prevent that like claimed by BitFi. BitFi didn’t immediately respond, but…

Disclose wants to create a legal safe harbor for security researchers

An increasing number of enterprises take advantage of bug bounty programs to identify vulnerabilities and structural weaknesses within software. But outside of these formal programs, informing vendors about security issues can be a legal minefield. Some firms welcome the help of the security community, and seek to reward it with bounties, swag, and offers of employment. Others don’t respond well, and respond with legal threats — or worse, they call the cops. A great example of the latter is the Budapest Transport Authority (BKK in Hungarian), which recently called the cops on an 18-year-old security researcher after he found a…

Facebook’s Digital Literacy Library is an imperfect course in online etiquette

Facebook today released a “Digital Literacy Library,” a series of education modules designed to help parents and teachers educate children on best behavior online. But Facebook seems to be leaving out questions about what it could do to protect kids online as well. The lessons, aimed at children between the ages of 11-18, cover such topics as privacy, security, and how to behave respectfully. The lessons were created by Harvard’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society, and it’s worth noting you can find the same materials on the Center’s Digital Literacy Resource Platform (DLRP). I’ve read some of the…

Study: People are less likely to turn a robot off if it asks them not to

Aug02

A team of German researchers published a study earlier this week indicating people can be duped into leaving a robot turned on just because it “asks” them to. The problem is called personification and it could cause our species some problems as machines become more integrated into our society. Robots, to hear us in the media tell it, represent the biggest existential threat to humanity since the atom bomb. In the movies they rise up and kill us with bullets and lasers, and in the headlines they’re coming to take everyone’s jobs. But dystopian nightmares aren’t always so obvious. The…

There’s a reason video game trailers are so confusing

Aug02
by Sindy Cator on August 2, 2018 at 5:52 pm
Posted In: Around the Web, gaming

Game trailers are often our first impression on a coming title, so color me surprised when I noticed so many of them are dark, gloomy, and disorienting. Early trailers for AAA games can often be poorly lit and held together by jumpy editing. While these trailers aren’t always the most informative, there’s a reason they’re used to hype up an unfinished game. When I saw the trailer for Shadow of the Tomb Raider, I was confused because I couldn’t, for the life of me, tell what was actually happening in the damned thing. Between choppy edits and overwhelming gloom made all…
