Today, at a standing-room only event in New York City, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Home. This is the first smart speaker from the South Korean tech giant, and comes with the Bixby smart assistant at its heart. Another thing: it also looks a bit like an inexpensive IKEA stool. The Galaxy Home, unlike the Google Home speaker and the ubiquitous Amazon Echo, is perched upon a tripod, and is coated in a delicate grey fabric. I’m not the only person to notice this. Samsung today revealed the final form of its oft-rumored Bixby-powered smart speaker, the Galaxy Home, at its Unpacked event. This nifty, tri-legged device takes its place on the market alongside the Apple HomePod, the Google Home, and the Amazon Echo. The Galaxy Home has eight built-in microphones and a touch display on the top. As you might imagine, you can use it to control other smart devices in the home, though the company is remaining buttoned up about the device’s full capabilities until the Samsung Developer Conference. The US Department of Defense’s recently established Joint Artificial Intelligence Center (JAIC) has finally debuted and will oversee the Pentagon’s AI strategy. Better late than never, right? After a couple of years’ worth of paperwork drills, Deputy Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan released a document at the end of June establishing the JAIC, and stating it would take the next 30 days to figure out what its national mission objectives and personnel needs are. The specifics of how the center will carry out its duties going forward haven’t been publicly released, but that’s par for the course when dealing with military…
