It’s a dumb idea to make Trump’s Space Force it’s own military branch

Vice President Mike Pence today unveiled the Trump administration’s plans to form a sixth military branch called Space Force. It’s a stupid idea. As a major science nerd, Star Wars fanatic, and lover of the cosmos the thought of Trump’s Space Force causes my inner child to leap for joy and make weird laser sounds. But I’m not a child. I’m a grown up and a military veteran. And the US armed forces shouldn’t be anyone’s fantasy factory. Before we go any further, I’d like to make it perfectly clear that, were this bad idea to become a reality, my…

Online dating study shows everyone seeks partners ‘out of their league’

A recently published study sought answers to a seemingly unquantifiable question: What does dating “out of your league” really mean? Published in the journal Science Advances, new research details a “hierarchy of desirability” that attempts to pinpoint the traits that makes a desirable partner out of reach. University of Michigan sociologist and lead author of the study Elizabeth Bruch told The Washington Post: What would it mean scientifically for someone to be out of your league? There are so many folk theories about dating, and what are the rules of dating, and the strategies people have. It hit us, like…

VP Mike Pence unveils detailed plans for Space Force

US Vice President Mike Pence, speaking at the Pentagon today, revealed more details about a proposed new military branch, a “Space Force.” While we’ve known this was a project of the current administration, we’ve only today received details about how, exactly, it could actually be realized. According to Pence, this militarized Space Force would be part of the Defense Department, and they intended to create it by 2020. Pence also said President Trump would request $8 billion to spend on the space security systems over the next five years. Needless to say, this would require lots of new infrastructure for…

Samsung’s Note 9 is a welcome return to obscene specs

Aug09

Samsung‘s Note 8 was one of the best phones of 2017, yet I couldn’t help but think it felt a little tame. When the Note series has long represented overpowered specs and features, Samsung seemed to play it safe in order to prevent another disaster like the Note 7’s. With the Note 9, Samsung is ready to be more daring again. Announced today at an event in Brooklyn, it has pretty much the same glassy design Samsung has been using since the S6 – attractive, but a little stale. You’d be hard-pressed to tell it apart from its predecessor, but…

Which inexpensive IKEA stool does the Galaxy Home look like?

Aug09

Today, at a standing-room only event in New York City, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Home. This is the first smart speaker from the South Korean tech giant, and comes with the Bixby smart assistant at its heart. Another thing: it also looks a bit like an inexpensive IKEA stool. The Galaxy Home, unlike the Google Home speaker and the ubiquitous Amazon Echo, is perched upon a tripod, and is coated in a delicate grey fabric. I’m not the only person to notice this. Galaxy Home looks like the Google Home on legs that you would see on a chair in…
