It might sound shocking, but it appears 60 out of the top 100 cryptocurrencies by market share are yet to actually release a working product to the public – despite raising millions of dollars in funding. Cryptocurrency analysis firm Invest in Blockchain reviewed the product development efforts of the the top 100 cryptocurrencies to reach this conclusion. Among other things, the company took into consideration each project’s current status, roadmap, release history, and already available features (that have actually been delivered). The study has defined a working product as one that is available to the public, and is used on…

SEC ruling suggests cryptocurrency airdrops violate securities law

Airdrops are totally all the rage. Blockchain companies have been resorting to token giveaways and marketing bounty programs as a way of circumventing the Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) ban on initial coin offerings (ICOs) – but this is probably going to change very soon. In an announcement on its website, SEC revealed it has served a lifetime ban and a $30,000 fine to cryptocurrency startup Tomahawk for employing fraudulent marketing strategies to raise funds. As spotted by users on Twitter, the publicly available cease-and-desist order suggests that free tokens are securities. It reads, albeit in thick legalese: Tomahawk’s issuance of…

South Korean women protest against growing epidemic of spycam porn

Aug15

On August 4, a 35-degree Saturday, 70,000 women gathered in the streets of Seoul wearing masks. Many were holding signs declaring “My life is not your porn”. The South Korean women were speaking out in a fight against the country’s growing epidemic of spycam porn. This creepy porn genre — filming women without their knowledge or consent and then posting the footage online to be used as pornographic material — is locally known as ‘molka’. It secretly captures women in their most intimate moments, like using a public restroom, or takes images shot surreptitiously up women’s skirts whilst in public.…

Playboy sues blockchain startup for screwing its cryptocurrency porno payment plan

Aug15

Playboy Enterprises, the company behind seminal softcore pornography magazine Playboy, is suing a blockchain startup for fraud and breach of contract after it, uh, failed to deliver. The LA Times reports that a lawsuit has been filed in the Los Angeles County Superior Court. It alleges that Global Blockchain Technologies (BLOC) failed to fulfil pretty much every requirement of a deal to integrate cryptocurrency Vice Industry Token (VIT) with Playboy’s online pornography platform. A contract was signed in March that would have seen VIT be adopted as an authorized payment method, with BLOC building it a tokenized ecosystem that would…

India will launch its first crewed space mission by 2022

Addressing the nation on its 72nd Independence Day, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the country will send an Indian astronaut to space by 2022. That’s big, because if India can make its Mission Gaganyaan happen, it will become one of the only countries in the world – along with the US, Russia, and China – to have pulled off a crewed space mission. According to NDTV, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) plans to send three astronauts into space over the next few years, with the first mission taking place within 40 months from now at a cost…
