Researchers use gut bacteria to turn type A or B blood into universal donors

Bacteria found in the human gut could save countless lives by transforming type A or type B blood into type O. At a meeting of the American Chemical Society today, Steve Withers of the University of British Colombia presented new research suggesting enzymes found in gut bacteria could effectively strip antigens from the two most common blood types. If successful, the discovery would essentially make most types of blood accessible to those who need it, regardless of their blood type. For a blood transfusion to work, a lot of things have to go right. It’s an intricate patchwork that requires…

HTC reveals pricing and specs on the Vive wireless headset adapter

HTC today officially announced a wireless adapter for the Vive and Vive Pro virtual reality headsets. The details: HTC will begin pre-order sales for US customers starting September 5, with a global launch slated for September 24. The adapter will set you back $299.99. If you’re buying it for a Vive Pro headset you’ll need to shell out an additional $60 for a compatibility kit. That’s a lot of coin: Yes, yes it is. You can get an entire Oculus Go unit for about $100 cheaper – but let’s not act like that’s the same thing. Sure the Go is…

Relive the glory days of Windows 2000 in the comfort of a browser window

Back in the year 2000 (can you believe that was 18 years ago?), there were two big versions of Windows to choose from. While Microsoft built the disastrous Window ME for consumers – which was arguably even worse than Vista – all the cool kids knew Windows 2000 was what you really wanted. Since it was built for pros, it had few frills but was stable and zippy. Now you can revisit Microsoft’s boxy OS from the comfort of your browser. Developer Fabrice Bellard built a Windows 2000 virtual machine that runs in your browser (it even worked on my…

MIT made an image editing AI that can replace the background in any image

MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL) just developed an AI-assisted image editing tool that automates object selection. This is the Holy Grail of selection tools — you can behold it in the video below. For millions of people, Photoshop is a program that’s used to bring out the best visual features in images. But at TNW we’re more likely to use it to make Mark Zuckerberg look like a vampire or to put a sombrero on a hacker. And, speaking only for myself, using Photoshop is time-consuming and hard. What we need is an object grabber AI. We could…
