This fake news detection algorithm outperforms humans

When researchers working on developing a machine learning-based tool for detecting fake news realized there wasn’t enough data to train their algorithms, they did the only rational thing: They crowd-sourced hundreds of bullshit news articles and fed them to the machine. The algorithm, which was developed by researchers from the University of Michigan and the University of Amsterdam, uses natural language processing (NLP) to search for specific patterns or linguistic cues that indicate a particular article is fake news. This is different from a fact checking algorithm that cross-references an article with other pieces to see if it contains inconsistent…

Facebook no longer takes a cut of Messenger games on Android

Facebook announced this week it’ll no longer be taking a cut of revenue on games played on the Android version of Messenger, due to the fact that Google’s already taking a fairly large piece of the pie. In an update on a group for developers of Instant Games — which you play directly from your Facebook News Feed — the official Instant Game page revealed updates to the monetization options: “We are focused on making the Instant Games platform an environment that is rooted in strong economics for our developer partners.” The update with regards to revenue is described thus:…

There’s no GPS in outer space. If people get lost on the Moon, or on the way to Mars they’re pretty much screwed. NASA and Intel want to keep that from happening, so they’ve turned to AI for solutions. NASA recently concluded its eight week Frontier Development Lab (FDL) summer program with a demonstration event hosted by Intel. The program included nine teams working on core problems for space travel and extraterrestrial colonization. Its goal was to address these specific knowledge gaps using artificial intelligence. The event covered the search for exoplanets, sending a probe to observe the sun up close,…

The pros and cons of using VPNs

Aug22

I’ll admit it: I wasn’t on the VPN bandwagon at first. I enjoy jumping into my work headfirst, and the idea of using VPNs — Virtual Private Networks that allow people to conduct their usual internet business from behind the safety of a private, secure network — seemed contrary to the way I try to work. I’m trying to go 100 miles per hour on an ongoing basis, and if a VPN would slow me down, I would kindly say no thank you. I started coming around after working with an award-winning creative director at my company, who, in addition…
