Xiaomi is launching more phones than ever and it’s hard to keep up

Chinese smartphone company Xiaomi launched three smartphones that are part of its new Redmi 6 series today in India. That includes the Redmi 6A, the Redmi 6, and the Redmi 6 Pro, with prices ranging from $84 to $154. While the 6 Pro is a new model in Xiaomi’s budget lineup, the other two handsets are merely iterations of their predecessors from last year. According to data by IDC, Xiaomi sales account for almost 30 percent of phones in India. And it has achieved that number by mostly championing the segment of mid-range ($80-$200) phones. And it’s great, but it is…

Amazon’s two secret strategies behind becoming a trillion-dollar company

Last night, Amazon became the second US company valued at over a trillion dollars, following the path tread just months earlier by Apple. It’s a remarkable milestone, and Amazon’s road to a trillion was over 25 years in the making. It was entirely the product of Jeff Bezos’ leadership and cunning strategy. Curious as to what that strategy is? TNW has followed Amazon for years now, and we’ve been able to distil their approach into two distinct parts. These can be easily replicated by any company eager to hit this exclusive milestone. Firstly, treat your workers so abysmally, the estate…

Someone paid $170,000 for the most expensive CryptoKitty ever

Blockchain-based game CryptoKitties has seen the highest trade volume since February over the past 24 hours, and it has only one cute little kitten to thank for it. Someone purchased Dragon, a CryptoKitty, for 600 ETH ($170,000 approximately) on Tuesday, making her the most expensive kitty to be ever traded in the history of the game. Dragon broke the record of Founder Cat #18, which sold for 253 ETH ($110,000 at the time of sale) in December last year. On primary inspection, Dragon looks like your average CryptoKitty. She’s got average looks and average attributes (called “Cattributes”). Remarkably, she’s a ninth generation…

It seems the South Korean government is intent on encouraging the country’s adoption of blockchain, as it plans to inject more investment into the tech’s development. The Korea Internet and Security Agency (KISA) has announced it will invest 10 billion won ($9 million) into 12 projects designed to demonstrated the potential of the tech to the public, as spotted by CoinDesk Korea. With this move, KISA aims to expand the total number of government-backed projects to 18 by 2019. By comparison, KISA backed only six projects in 2018, with a 4.2 billion won ($3.8 million) investment. The projects in question…

Indian politicians are bribing voters with free phones worth millions of dollars

Sep05

Indian politicians have historically never been shy about making big promises to the public about their plans for the country during election campaigns; they even offer freebies to entice people to vote for them. In recent years, gadgets have become the giveaway of choice, taking over from cash, livestock, gold, and subsidized pantry staples. In the western state of Rajasthan, current chief minister Vasundhara Raje is stepping her game up with upcoming state elections. She intends to put 10 million smartphones into hands of the voters who vote for her, and their families The plan, which will see voters receive a grant…
