Snap’s new Spectacles actually look… wearable?

It seems Snapchat finally gets the concept of aesthetics. The company’s just introduced two new kinds of Spectacles — both of which look considerably less dorky than their predecessor. You remember Snapchat‘s Spectacles, the sunglasses-cum-clumsy recorder, don’t you? They were pitched as a sort of teen-friendly Google Glass, meant to compliment the app by letting users take photos and videos right from their temples. Despite reception that could best be described as “lukewarm,” Snapchat’s kept steadily pushing them. If you’re like me, then the main reason you didn’t buy the Spectacles — besides the fact they’re expensive and future vacations…

Canon goes all-in on mirrorless with a full-frame camera and unique lenses

Hot on the heels of Nikon’s first full-frame mirrorless cameras, Canon is announcing its own: the EOS R. After releasing half-baked mirrorless products through its EOS M line – likely in an attempt to avoid cannibalizing its DSLR sales – the company appears to be embracing the format in its entirety. The EOS R is a fairly mainstream full-frame camera at a $2299 (body-only) price. It has a 30.3 megapixel sensor flanked by the new RF mount.  Native ISO ranges from 100-40,000, expandable from 50-102,4000. There are 5,655 AF points with 100 percent horizontal coverage, and it can shoot up…

MIT’s depression-detecting AI might be its scariest creation yet

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) recently developed a neural network that predicts, with a relatively high level of accuracy, the likelihood a person has a cognitive impairment. If you don’t mind speaking loosely, you could call it a depression detector. It’s not, but we’ll get into that later. The team, consisting of MIT researchers Tuka Alhanai, Mohammad Ghassemi, and James Glass are presenting their work this week at the Interspeech 2018 conference in India. According to their paper, they’ve developed a context-free method by which a machine can break down text or audio from a human and assign a…

It turns out lots of people actually did #DeleteFacebook

A Pew Study published today suggests up to three-quarters of Americans have taken steps to either tighten their Facebook security or distance themselves from the site entirely — both reflections of a certain loss of naivety in the site’s audience. According to the study, 74 percent of users have either adjusted their privacy settings, taken an extended break from the site, or outright deleted the app from their phones — a full 24 percent of the latter. All of the participants have taken these actions over the last year. Users didn’t say exactly why they’d taken these steps, but the…
