Research: Cryptocurrency market will go to shit, unless EU classifies ICOs as securities

Researchers from the Technical University of Munich have concluded that initial coin offerings (ICOs) and associated tokens should be seen as securities under European (EU) law. Not only that, EU regulators must mirror rules imposed by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). In a paper titled Reconciling US and EU Securities Laws, researchers Philipp Maume and Mathias Fromberger make the case for a unified regulatory response to cryptocurrency, particularly for ICOs. “It is our view that investment tokens (including hybrid tokens with some investment functions) are ‘transferable securities’ under Directive 2014/65/EU on Markets in Financial Instruments,” the paper declares. The…

Developer inefficiency is a £76 billion problem (but it’s not their fault)

Stripe, the card payment technology platform, has published research on the role software developers pay in the wider economy. It found that the inefficient use of developers could cost British businesses an astonishing £76 billion (nearly $100 billion) over the next decade. This is down to a number of factors, the main being that developers are increasingly bogged down with maintaining existing IT infrastructure, rather than working on strategic projects that could help their company innovate. Stripe’s research shows developers spend more than 17 hours a week focusing on maintenance and infrastructure issues. That’s almost half the hours spent during…

A leaked image hints that Nokia might buck the trend of dual rear cameras with a new five-shooter setup on its upcoming phone. The image suggests that the array hosts five lenses, an LED flash, and an IR focusing apparatus. Reportedly, the roles of these five lenses would be telephoto, black white, color and multi-lens pixel synthesis. Rumors suggest that the phone known internally as TA-1094 might be the upcoming Nokia 9 flagship despite speculations citing that the Nokia 10 could launch with five cameras. Finnish manufacturer HMD global which holds the right to Nokia brand also owns Purview branding that once graced Nokia’s high-end…

Goldman Sachs says ‘nuh-uhh’ to claims it is too scared to sell Bitcoin

Goldman Sachs has fought back at claims that it is dropping the development of its Bitcoin trading platform, suggesting that such a product will still be in the company’s future. Just no one knows when. It was originally reported that Goldman Sachs would have its Bitcoin trading platform in June. However, June has come and gone, and there is still, nothing. It appeared that legal pressures from the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) were the main reasons for the investment bank failing to provide the product. At Tech Crunch Disrupt today, Goldman Sachs CFO Marty Chavez, dismissed these claims as “fake…
