Social media has changed how we live, and surprisingly, how we die. Mortality used to be an intimate affair shared between families and close groups of friends, but that’s no longer the case. People now broadcast the passing of their loved ones across the internet to an audience of potentially billions. This raises an interesting question: are social media platforms, which are rife with trolls and aggressive advertising, appropriate vessels for collective grieving? Mark Alhermizi, founder and CEO of Everdays, has his doubts. These concerns, combined with research that dragged him to funeral director conferences worldwide, led him to launch a…

Back in 2014, Mark Zuckerberg made a $3 billion dollar bet through the acquisition of Oculus Rift that virtual reality (VR) would soon become one of the most social platforms that ever existed.   Fast forward to 2018 and very few VR companies have been successful (including Facebook) at building social communities that can bring users together into virtual worlds with real meaning and purpose. Cryptocurrency exchanges are hitting back at New York Attorney General’s scathing criticism, suggesting the industry lacks fairness, integrity, and security. Earlier this week, the office of the NY Attorney General office published a report which highlighted a number of risks cryptocurrency exchanges expose their users to, including the possibility of market manipulation. Yesterday, Coinbase’s Chief Policy Officer, Mike Lempres, published a blog post to clarify some of the report’s findings. The Attorney General’s report states that “Coinbase disclosed that almost 20 percent of executed volume on its platform was attributable to its own trading.” Lempres denies the Attorney General’s trading…

The entire Bitcoin infrastructure has been issued with a stern warning: update Bitcoin Core software or risk having the whole thing collapse. Until now, anyone could have brought down the entire Bitcoin blockchain by flooding full node operators with traffic, via a Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack. “A denial-of-service vulnerability (CVE-2018-17144) exploitable by miners has been discovered in Bitcoin Core versions 0.14.0 up to 0.16.2.” the patch notes state. “It is recommended to upgrade any of the vulnerable versions to 0.16.3 as soon as possible.” Developers have issued a patch for anyone running nodes, along with an appeal to update the software immediately.…
