Kobe Bryant is talking at TRON’s cryptocurrency event… for some reason

TRON founder and prolific marketeer, Justin Sun, has just pulled a megafamous rabbit out of his hat. None other than Kobe Bryant, one of the greatest basketballers of all time, will attend TRON’s blockchain conference next year, for some reason. Described as a basketball superstar turned “investment genius,” Kobe is slated to share his life experience and business insights with attendees at niTRON Summit in San Francisco next January. “I have been a huge fan of Kobe and deeply inspired by his journey. It’s my great honor to have Kobe as our special guest for the niTROn Summit,” said Sun. “It’s worth…

A few thoughts on HTC’s blockchain phone and what consumers can expect

HTC has been teasing images of its upcoming blockchain-powered Android smartphone – the Exodus 1 – for months now, but we might have to wait a little longer to see how it actually performs in the real world. The Taiwanese electronics giant was slated to show off a working demo of its handset at an event in Schenzhen, China, but all of a sudden: the device was a no-show. Still, TechCrunch managed to get its hands on the Exodus 1, and has since shared images of the phone (though only the hardware, not the actual software). A closer look at the…

Girls who play video games are three times more likely to study STEM than non-gamers

Nov20

I played a lot of video games when I was a teenager. I have fond memories of hours dedicated to the pixelated missions of the likes of Zelda and Mario Bros on my family’s Nintendo Entertainment System. I later went on to study physics and then engineering at university. Is there a connection between my degrees and my love of video games? That’s the question I wanted to answer with my recent research. I found that girls who were heavy video game players were over three times more likely to take a physical science, technology, engineering or maths (PSTEM) undergraduate…

My wife (mistakenly) thought a Tamagotchi could prepare me for fatherhood

Nov20

It’s 5PM and I’m working on a headphone review. Just a few hundred more words before I can file the copy with my editors and go home. I need to concentrate, but I can’t. Why? My child just soiled himself. Perhaps I’m getting a little ahead of myself. Let’s take a couple of steps back. No, I don’t have a kid. The offspring in this story is a Tamagotchi, which, almost 20 years later, is enjoying a revival. As a bona fide child of the 90’s, I’m no stranger to nostalgia, and when Bandai’s UK PR representative offered to send…

US Department of Justice is investigating Tether for market manipulation

Nov20

It seems US authorities aren’t yet done with controversial cryptocurrency Tether. The ‘USD-backed’ stablecoin is now being probed by the country’s Justice Department, according to a Bloomberg report. The US Department of Justice (DOJ) and Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) together launched a criminal probe into cryptocurrency market manipulation in May. The investigations have now zeroed in on a possible nexus involving Bitcoin, Tether, and cryptocurrency exchange desk Bitfinex as being responsible for illicit trading practices that led to a massive surge in the cryptocurrency market late last year. As part of the probe, the Justice Department is looking into Tether’s claim of being USD-backed,…
