The entire cryptocurrency market is now worth less than McDonald’s

Chew on this: the entire cryptocurrency market now has a smaller market cap than fast food titan McDonald’s. The total worth of the cryptocurrency market has fallen to $139.7 million – a staggering 80-percent-plus downswing compared to a $819 billion market cap in January 2018. By comparison, McDonald’s market cap currently stands at $140 billion. A stark contrast between visions and reality True, the comparison to McDonald’s is tongue-in-cheek – and admittedly not that insightful. But it does expose a stark contrast between hype and real-world use cases. For all the grandeur visions of decentralization, transparency, and security in a…

Welcome to TNW Basics, a collection of tips, tricks, guides, and advice on how to get the most out of your gadgets, apps, and other stuff. Have you ever wondered what you tweeted to your 28 followers back in 2009? Was it something along the lines of “Is this thing on?” or “Twitter sucks.” No matter what it was, I guarantee you did a lot of growing-up before becoming the well adjusted adult you are on Twitter today. What’s the best shape in the world? Hold on, don’t answer – I know exactly what you’re going to say: a square. Something cube-ish at least. I knew it and you’re in luck: welcome to Block Friday. Look, normal Black Friday lists are good and all, but kind of boring. They have some good deals, but where’s the theme? What ties them all together? Where’s the art? That’s right, nowhere. Block Friday is different. Here, we’re going to round up the best deals on square, cube, and cuboid products. Why? Because you’re worth it. $270 off HP’s ENVY desktop computer Wow,…

EU hates cryptocurrency and likes blockchain – for all the wrong reasons

Nov23
by Sindy Cator on November 23, 2018 at 12:04 pm
Posted In: Around the Web, blockchain, cryptocurrency, Hard Fork

The European Commission – the executive arm of the European Union – is a supporter of the common “blockchain, not Bitcoin” adage, it seems. At a blockchain roundtable session earlier this week, the Commission announced a new distributed ledger initiative that aims to transform the digital services space. Not only that, a number of banking giants, including Spain-based BBVA, are already part of the project. Along with “industry leaders” and “innovative startups,” the Commission also discussed ways to support the development of the distributed ledgers and create the “right conditions” for the technology to flourish. The initiative, called “International Association…

The difference between fungible and non-fungible cryptocurrency tokens

Nov23

Posted In: Around the Web, cryptocurrency, Hard Fork

Welcome to Hard Fork Basics, a collection of tips, tricks, guides, and advice to keep you up to date in the cryptocurrency and blockchain world. In the world of cryptocurrency, tokens are king. It’s certainly true that they can be effectively grouped into three distinct categories, but this is (mostly) for government watchdogs to decide the best regulatory measures taken to control their issuance and exchange. If we zoom out to see how tokens are built, rather than just how they should be regulated, it becomes obvious there are actually two flavors of cryptographic token: fungible, and non-fungible. Confused? Yeah, okay. Fair enough. Don’t…
