Fortnite bests Russia and Japan to become world’s 8th most-populated place

Bloomberg today determined that the number of players registered in Fortnite is now around 200 million. Let that number sink into your head. Epic Games later confirmed that number to GamesIndustry.Biz, meaning it’s not just some hyperbolic estimate, either. The number of players in Fortnite now outnumber all but a few of the world’s countries. Earlier this month, we reported the number of concurrent players in Fortnite now numbered over 8.3 million. At the time, we drew the comparison between Fortnite‘s concurrent players and those of every Steam game out there (Fortnite won, by the way). But to give you some idea of just how vast the…

Forget Siri: Here’s how to use Google Assistant on your iPhone or iPad

It’s safe to say the digital assistant wars are over. Siri, arguably, is awful, and the clear-cut favorite in the space is undoubtedly Google Assistant. As for Alexa, well, as the great Ricky Bobby once said, “if you’re not first you’re last.” For iOS users, this presents a bit of a problem. We know Siri is terrible, but there’s very little we can do about it. On the one hand, Apple‘s locked-down approach provides a stable and secure device that we fawn over, but that same digital prison leaves us unable to pick and choose our favorite options — a…

Here’s why low-credibility news seems to dominate Twitter

With the entire world seemingly up in arms over “fake news,” you’d think it would have been wiped out by now. Yet low-credibility content continues to thrive on social media thanks to the disproportionately influential effect that social media bots have on humans. A team of researchers from Indiana University at Bloomington recently conducted a ground-breaking study to determine how low-quality news sites manage to reach so many people with dubious articles. And, as you might guess, the answer is bots. The problem TNW spoke with Filippo Menczer, the professor who led the research. He told us that despite the…

Sony’s cartridge patent raises questions about the PS5 (and the Vita)

Nov27

A recently-discovered patent implies Sony might be working on a new kind of game cartridge. Whether this is an idea for its upcoming console, tentatively called the PlayStation 5, or an as-yet-unknown successor to the poor old PlayStation Vita, we don’t know — but it’s also possible it could be both. Dutch site TechTastic today revealed the patent, which was filed in South Korea last year with Korean Intellectual Property Right Information Service (KIPRIS). It shows a game cartridge with a small port on one end and a keychain-like hole on the other. It’s an unusual shape for a game cartridge, to…
