Early impressions: Alienware takes a few risks with the new M15

Alienware’s m15 is a shocking new take on the humongous laptop: it’s not humongous. It’s still a powerhouse that handles 1080p gaming with apparent ease. But now it fits in a backpack. I’ve only spent a couple of days with the m15, but my experience so far has given me a few early impressions. Alienware is here to take some risks with the new m15, and chief among them is the aesthetic. This includes less lighting, a smaller body, and new color schemes. The m15 comes in two finish options: Epic Silver and Nebula Red. The silver is elegant, classy, and…

Mixer may have found the secret sauce for paying streamers full-time

Mixer, Microsoft’s game streaming service, has always played second fiddle to Twitch. But a new payment paradigm on Mixer might just change that, because Microsoft’s platform has come up with something its rival doesn’t have: it allows streamers to be paid without the viewers themselves having to pony up the dough. Mixer recently introduced “Season 2,” a massive platform update that introduced several new features. Among them are Skills, which allow users to put special emoji or moving characters into a streamer’s chat, or to set off effects like confetti or fireworks. From what I’ve seen, it allows viewers to…

How Hive is raising a massive army to build AI-training datasets

Dec05

Posted In: Around the Web, artificial intelligence

The thing people forget about artificial intelligence is that it’s exactly that — artificial. Behind Facebook’s flesh-spotting algorithms and Mobileye’s pedestrian-avoiding machines are vast, complicated datasets, which are built and labeled by a vast human workforce. Have you ever wondered where that workforce comes from? I assumed that the likes of Tesla and Google owned vast offices in Manila and Mumbai where, under the harsh glare of halogen lighting, an workforce of digital workers painstakingly label content for a few dollars a day. The reality is that they’re just as likely working for Hive — perhaps the most important AI…
