The inside story behind the All-View Display on the Honor View20

On Monday, Huawei’s mobile sub-brand Honor announced the upcoming View20 smartphone at a packed-out event in the middle of Hong Kong. This device is exciting for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it comes with a 48MP rear camera, which, according to the company, takes shots that can rival the quality you’d get from a DSLR camera. But perhaps most exciting of all, it ditches the dreaded notch entirely. Unlike the approaches found in the Vivo Nex and the Honor Magic 2, the forthcoming Honor View 20 has a small hole on the top-left of the screen which conceals the front-facing…

Kindle Paperwhite 2018 Review: The best ereader for the money adds waterproofing and audiobooks

Dec14

If you want an e-reader, you should probably buy the new Kindle Paperwhite. I can pretty much end this review here. For better or worse, Amazon is the best source for ebooks, and the Kindle Paperwhite is its best ereader for most people. If you have the money, and don’t mind the larger size, splurge for the Oasis. Otherwise, this is the one to get What I like: As with the last Oasis update, there are two big changes on this year’s Paperwhite: It’s now waterproof and supports audiobooks from Audible with a pair of Bluetooth headphones. I consider the former…

GoT’s Charles Dance on fighting zombies in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s latest DLC

Dec14

The latest DLC addition to Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, a Zombies mode called “Dead of the Night,” is a campy, extraordinary map filled with undead mayhem — notable as well for starring four very well-known actors. I got the chance to speak to one of them: Charles Dance, who our readers will probably recognize most readily as Tywin Lannister in Game of Thrones. In “Dead of the Night,” Dance plays Godfrey, a butler caught in the middle of a zombie outbreak in a palatial mansion along with three other misfits — and whose name has to be a shout-out to…

Tumblr’s ‘female-presenting nipples’ language isn’t semantic — it’s oppression

Dec14

Tumblr‘s whiplash-inducing ban on “all adult content” has been about as well-received as a tequila-fart in a car full of strangers with the windows stuck in the up position. Furthermore, it’s offensive, poorly-implemented, and serves little use besides shaming women for having nipples. The company, which is owned by Verizon Media Group, announced it would implement the ban after Apple removed the app from the App store for being an unwitting host to child sexual abuse imagery. How banning adult content addresses this issue is beyond rational thought, but whether the ban makes sense or not doesn’t really matter to those negatively…

How numb are we to Facebook’s fuck-ups at this point?

Dec14

Facebook apparently couldn’t get to the end of its awful 2018 without exposing even more user data —  photos, in this case. But at this point, we’re so inoculated to Facebook’s colossal leaks and data breaches that I challenge anyone to summon up a more impassioned response than a slight shrug. It’s just not special or even interesting anymore — and that’s deeply screwed up. Engineering director Tomer Bar revealed the bug in a post to Facebook’s developer site. According to him, the bug came from the permissions users grant to apps to access their Facebook photos. Ordinarily, this is just…
