This study shows why people fall for fake online profiles

The first step in conducting online propaganda efforts and misinformation campaigns is almost always a fake social media profile. Phony profiles for nonexistent people worm their way into the social networks of real people, where they can spread their falsehoods. But neither social media companies nor technological innovations offer reliable ways to identify and remove social media profiles that don’t represent actual authentic people. It might sound positive that over six months in late 2017 and early 2018, Facebook detected and suspended some 1.3 billion fake accounts. But an estimated 3 to 4 percent of accounts that remain, or approximately…

End of year crypto roundup: How did Bitcoin Cash perform in 2018?

In August 2017, the controversy over Bitcoin’s scalability issues led to its blockchain being split for the first time in history, resulting in its first hard fork — Bitcoin Cash (BCH). This holiday period, Plugged is running a very special advent calendar. Over the course of 12 days, we’ll be sharing a selection of sweet, sweet deals. You can thank us later. You know what? We couldn’t just stop at 12 days of TNW advent — we’re going to take it up to 14. So, on the thirteenth day of TNW’s advent, the lovely team gave to me… $20 off the Sonos One speaker You know Sonos, right? The company’s behind some of the world’s most popular smart speakers — and the Sonos One is no exception. The device is Alexa supported,…

2018 was a crappy year for tech and science

Dec24

Here at TNW every day is a present, so it’s always our birthday. But we understand that the world can be a bit of a bummer for everyone else. After all, we write about the dark underbelly of science and technology: Elon Musk. Kidding, actually there’s a lot more wrong with science and tech than just Musk’s penchant for accusing random cave divers of pedophilia. Or his Trumpian war against the mainstream media. Or his insane tweet declaring that Tesla would go public. Or him throwing his garbage into space. If you thought I was going to bring up Musk…
