Lawmakers from Colorado are looking to introduce legislation that would exempt cryptocurrencies from current securities laws. Last week, Stephen Fenberg (Democrat) and Jack Tate (Republican) together filed the “Colorado Digital Token Act” – spotted by CoinDesk. The bill states, if a token is designed for consumption, and not marked for investment or speculation, it should not be subject to securities legislation. As such, any companies looking to issues cryptocurrencies or tokens would need to clearly state the coin’s purpose and satisfy the relevant regulations. In order to qualify for the exemption, the cryptocurrency or token will need to be usable…

Tile – the company best known for its smart tags that help you find misplaced wallets and keys – today announced a partnership with several Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) chipmakers which will see its gadget-tracking technology enabled at the chip level. Electronics manufacturers can then enable Tile as a feature on their products without any further engineering effort. To bring this to life, the company has partnered with several of the leading BLE chipmakers, including Qualcomm, Toshiba, Cypress, Silicon Labs, and Dialog. During 2018, Tile’s tracking technology made modest inroads into the consumer hardware space, and found its way into…

CES is upon us and it’s raining gaming laptops. After Samsung and Asus’ announcements, Acer has unveiled a curious $4,000 convertible laptop named the Predator Triton 900. The device features a 17-inch 4K display supported by a CNC-machined Ezel Aero Hinge that allows you to flip, extend, or recline the screen while it remains attached to the base. It supports four display modes, including one that allows for touchscreen gaming and sketching. The screen also has G-sync support to prevent screen tearing in games. Interestingly, the trackpad is placed on the right side of the keyboard to give users “natural hand…

December is an expensive month for anyone, and tech companies across Africa went on a fundraising spree in advance of the festive period last month. Companies from across the continent, in a variety of sectors, raised funding in December. Most notable was pan-African e-commerce company Jumia, which raised strategic investment from the alcoholic beverage brand Pernod Ricard. Another major fundraiser was infrastructure firm Liquid Telecom, which secured a $180 million USD cash injection from CDC Group, while Nigerian travel company Wakanow raised $40 million USD. South African fintech company JUMO took its total raised funds to over $103 million USD…

To celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Bitcoin genesis block, crypto-inspired graffiti artist Pascal Boyart has hidden $1,000 worth of Bitcoin inside a new mural to be found somewhere in Paris. The fresco is named after (and inspired by) the famous Eugène Delacroix artwork “La Liberté guidant le peuple” (Liberty leading the people), painted in the early 19th century. Pascal has updated the piece to pay homage to the Gilet Jaunes, or Yellow Jackets – the French protest movement fighting for reprieve from an ever-increasing cost of living and an apparent indifference from president Emmanuel Macron. #StreetArt treasure hunt in…
