Google killed the Chromecast Audio, so now’s a great time to buy one

Google just discontinued one of its best and most underrated products, the Chromecast Audio. On the plus side, the company is offering a great deal as it gets rid of inventory: you can now buy the $35 dongle for just $15 on Google’s website. Launched in 2015, Chromecast Audio was an easy way to add casting abilities to almost any speaker. As long it had an analog or digital audio input, you could cast to it. Since then, Google has launched its own line of speakers, while third-party manufacturers have added Google’s casting protocol to their own products as well.…

Unity creators have an online spat, Epic slides in with $25M in ‘fuck you’ money

Jan11

It’s not often in the video game industry that we get to see a public face-off between two companies, but we got one this week between Unity and Epic, creators of two of the most popular game engines among developers. The conflict began between Unity and Improbable, the developers of a cloud platform called SpatialOS. Improbable announced in a blog post yesterday that, due to a change in the engine’s terms of service, it was in breach of license with Unity and the two would no longer be compatible. Naturally this caused game developers who used both tools to spiral into…

Facebook and YouTube aren’t even trying to enforce the Alex Jones ban

Jan11

After Alex Jones was effectively banned from the internet — or at least his major distribution channels — last August, it appeared that we’d be rid of his half-baked conspiracy theories once and for all. Or, that’s what we thought, anyway. Following multiple “strikes” for content that violated its terms of service, YouTube permanently removed Alex Jones’ InfoWars channel last October. Gone are thousands of hours of archived content, more than 2.5 million subscribers, and the ranting diatribes of the internet’s most marketable villain — now that Martin Shkreli has stepped out of the public eye while appealing a seven…

Here’s what you actually need in your home recording studio

Jan11

Giant recording studios with millions of dollars worth of gear and gold records lining the walls incite a certain nostalgia in those of us who grew up in a time when Berry Gordy and Rick Rubin were as well known as the stars they produced. But those days are long gone, and those big studios no longer do much you can’t do at home. It’s 2019 now and it has never been easier or cheaper to build a home recording studio. Don’t get me wrong — it’s never been easier to spend a boatload of money on gear either. So,…

Alien Blackout backlash shows fans and creators see mobile very differently

Jan11
by Sindy Cator on January 11, 2019 at 6:27 pm
Posted In: Around the Web, gaming

Fans and game makers are clashing over a newly revealed mobile game, Alien Blackout. A continuation of the Alien series, revived so spectacularly with 2014’s Alien Isolation, the game has fans crying foul and developers raising a confused eyebrow. Two very different attitudes towards mobile gaming are starting to meet — one which focuses on the genre’s potential, and the other which sees it as the domain of low-effort cash grabs. On the face of it, it doesn’t sound like such a big deal. While mobile games aren’t necessarily as long or as detailed as console or PC games, they’re a respectable genre in…
