Why you should care about CERN’s new and BIGGER particle collider

After four years of research, a new conceptual design report for CERN’s 100 km-long Future Circular Collider (FCC) has been released — marking a major milestone for science. Even though it’s only a proposal at the moment, scientists are extremely excited about the prospect of new particle collider that’s roughly four times the length of the previous Large Hadron Collider (LHC). “This type of research is the engine for innovation for the entire society,” James Beacham, particle physicist at CERN, told TNW, hardly containing his excitement. “An idea like the FCC is something our species has never ever done in…

Global climate change could boost iPhone sales, Apple reports

Rising sea levels. Food shortages. Hurricanes. Floods. Civil unrest. Refugees. Droughts. All things considered, catastrophic global climate change doesn’t sound like a barrel of laughs. Looking on the bright side is everyone’s favorite optimistic tech company, Apple, which reckons it’ll be good for iPhone sales. In a recently-published report, the iconic tech firm suggested that safety features like “SOS,” which connects iPhone and Apple Watch users with the emergency services, could spur “increased customer loyalty and demand” in the face of catastrophic weather events. Apple also touts other potential life-saving features of its phones, including its built-in flashlight and Wireless…

The internet has made sports betting easier, so Uganda is banning it

Jan23

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of Uganda has issued a directive that states new gambling licenses will no longer be issued to sports betting companies and existing ones will not be renewed once they expire. One of the main reasons for effectively banning sports betting, as explained by Museveni, is that it promotes idleness among Uganda’s young people. The ban was revealed by David Bahati, Minister of State for Finance, on Sunday during a church gathering. “We have received a directive from President Museveni to stop licensing sports betting, gaming, and gambling companies. The President has now directed the board which has been regulating…

Why does Google show mysterious art when searching two random 4-letter words!

Jan23

The internet is an inherently strange place. I mean, the fact we call it a place at all shows how we lack the vocabulary to really express what it is. And in this space (here we are again), strange things happen. Like when you type two-strings of random four letter words into an image search and Google shows you a bizarre collection of connected art. You know, like this: This bizarre occurrence was spotted by Reddit user Yanekke and shared on the social networking site. If you’re dubious, give it a try yourself. Head over to Google Images and type two…
