Quotable

"Obama's first televised address to the nation from the Oval Office proved one thing: He is fundamentally transforming America, into a nation of polluted waters and lands, political name calling, and a clear plan to fail everybody, except the enemies of America. And yes, I do believe he loves America. I just think he's a hyphenated-American. To be specific, when it comes to his politics, I believe he's what is known as an idiotic-American." ~ Yasha Harari

Japanese officials will target millions of IoT devices to help secure the Olympics

With the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games just one year away, Japan isn’t leaving anything to chance. On Friday, the country approved a law that would allow the government to hack into insecure IoT devices, in order to survey the number of easily-hackable gadgets that exist within the country. The survey will be conducted by employees of the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), supervised by staffers from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. Perhaps for privacy reasons, the survey is being performed under punishingly strict rules-of-engagement. Don’t get any ideas of Japanese government hackers firing up Metasploit…

Open standards can disrupt Facebook’s messaging monopoly

Facebook made the news last week when The New York Times’ Mike Isaac reported that CEO Mark Zuckerberg intended to integrate the company’s three messaging platforms: WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram. We don’t have all the details of exactly how this will work. The plan is still in its early stages, and there are plenty of moving parts – legal and technical – to take care of. What’s clear is this: with more than 2.6 billion users between the platforms, this is set to impact a lot of people if it goes through – and potentially many hundreds of millions more…

Sandmarc’s $100 iPhone lenses are a must for photo nerds

I’ve been using the iPhone XS for a few months now, and I can safely say it is one of the top camera phones from the last year. And just as I was thinking about how I could dial its photography capabilities up a notch, Sandmarc sent me a couple of lenses made for the XS to try out: a telephoto and a wide-angle, each costing $99 and $89 respectively. Here’s what you’ll find in the box for both the lenses: A case for the iPhone XS with slots for lens attachment, a clip-on mount (in case you don’t want…

Moonday Mornings: Kik preps to fight the SEC over ICO

It’s Monday Morning, you should know how this works by now. Dive in for a wrap up of the weekend’s blockchain and cryptocurrency news. 1. Peer-to-peer Bitcoin trading website, Localbitcoins.com, was accessed by an “unauthorized source” last Saturday which allowed the illegitimate third-party to send Bitcoin from a number of affected accounts, the marketplace announced on Reddit. The attacker managed to gain access to six accounts by exploiting a third-party forum feature that prompted users to sign in using their 2FA codes. Only these codes were sent to the hacker, allowing them to login to and empty the victim’s account,…
