Why probing this new artificial DNA molecule could help us discover aliens

It has been more than 65 years since James Watson and Francis Crick, working with Rosalind Franklin and Maurice Wilkins discovered that DNA – the basic chemical information code of all life forms – has a double helical structure that played an important role in its function. Since then, astrobiologists have tried to conjure up the myriad forms and shapes in which life could be found on other planets. And a significant part of that imagination requires figuring out the permutations and combinations in which DNA could be assembled in such extraterrestrial organisms, as opposed to those found in living…

Mercedes-Benz is launching yet another blockchain pilot. After running various blockchain trials in the past, the car manufacturer, owned by Daimler AG, has partnered with Icertis, a contract management software provider for enterprise businesses. According to a statement, the pilot will look at how blockchain technology can help with the documentation of contracts in the supply chain, helping Daimler to vet third-party suppliers accordingly. As part of the procurement process, suppliers are typically vetted in terms of control standards and contractional obligations with regards to human rights, working conditions, safety, and such. By leveraging blockchain technology, companies could get a more transparent mapping…

It’s Monday, you know what that means. It’s time for Moonday Mornings, Hard Fork’s wrap-up of the weekend’s cryptocurrency and blockchain news. By no fault of our own, this week, things are a little different. Let us introduce to you Moonday Mornings: the insitutional edition. It just so happens that all the stories you missed this weekend in some way relate to institutional use of blockchain or cryptocurrencies. 1. A Liechtenstein bank has established a cryptocurrency trading platform, but it’s only for institutional investors. So unless you’re an institution, sorry, but it’s not for you. Bank Frick’s DLT Markets AG…

Here are the 5 hottest startups in Germany

By Marta Dawydzik and Andrea Hak When you hear underground techno clubs with permissive raves and more museums than rainy days per year, there is only one city that comes to mind: Berlin. Aside from the eccentric party driven artist’s haven its known to be, Berlin is also the birthplace of one of Europe’s first tech hubs. Just last year Germany’s startups collected a record €4.6 billion in investments with Berlin-based scale-ups alone responsible for €2.64 billion of the intake. At the same time, we’re now seeing other major German cities catching up faster than anyone could have imagined. During…

In the past six months, we’ve seen plenty of phones with three cameras, and a bunch with four cameras too. Now, Nokia has upped the ante with the launch of the world’s first phone with five rear cameras – the Nokia 9 Pureview. But intriguingly, instead of offering a range of options for shooting pictures, the phone’s single focus is to provide top-notch image quality. So, there’s no optical zoom and no wide-angle or ultra wide-angle lenses. And maybe that’s a good thing. Here’s what the device’s rear camera assembly contains: two 12-megapixel RGB color sensors, three 12-megapixel monochrome sensors,…
