Google Earth and Carmen Sandiego is the best combo since PB & J

Carmen Sandiego, renowned lady thief and the original superstar of edutainment, has finally made her way into a new video game — only this time, the actual world is her canvas in Google Earth. I don’t know who came up with this idea, but I’m so glad they had that brainwave, because this combination of Carmen and Google Earth is so inspired that I don’t know how it’s taken this long for someone to come up with it. Thanks, no doubt, to her recent Netflix revival, Google is collabing with Carmen’s publishers, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt on an in-Earth game called…

As rumored earlier this week, Google has released the first beta for the next version of its mobile os, Android Q. Google saves the best stuff until after its I/O conference in the spring, but Beta 1 is already packed with goodies. While the changes so far are mostly aimed at developers, it’s a good teaser at what’s to come. You can read the full blog post here, but we’ve gone ahead and summarized the most notable changes. Support for foldable phones Foldable phones are the big theme in mobile design this year, and Google is ready for it. The…

New Yakuza spin-off yanked from shelves over actor’s arrest

The arrest of 51-year-old Pierre Taki might not sound like a big deal in the grand scheme of things — but for gamers who were hoping to get their hands on SEGA’s keen new Yakuza spin-off, Judgment sometime soon, this might be disaster. Nothing has happened, as yet, other than the actor’s potential cocaine use, but there’s a reason everyone’s already worried. According to the Japan Times, Taki is currently being detained after a positive drug test and could face a prison sentence of up to seven years. SEGA Japan released a statement saying it was still confirming facts and figuring out its…

Report: ICE database tracks nearly 60% of US population without a warrant

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) today revealed US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) allegedly circumvented state laws and federal privacy guidelines when it purchased access to a commercial database for the purpose of conducting mass surveillance. Documents obtained through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request by the ACLU of Northern California indicate that more than 9,000 ICE agents currently have access to a license plate database containing information on as much as 60 percent of the US population. You can view the documents here. The driver location database is operated by Vigilant Solutions, a for-profit commercial business that…

Ethereum insiders deny there’s only one computer keeping a copy of its blockchain

Ethereum‘s most recent fork was (eventually) successful, but it came with unintended consequence: the greater cryptocurrency community learned of its special “big, scary nodes,” and immediately freaked out. Blockchain infrastructure provider BlockCypher recently posted its version of events leading up to (and directly following) last month’s Constantinople upgrade It details its quest to reboot a special, dedicated machine (archive node) used to record all the “states” (settings) Ethereum has taken in its history. At a high level, archive nodes store Ethereum snapshots. Not just a record of all the transactions processed, but a complete map of the entire blockchain each time a block is…
