The EU Parliament just approved the controversial Copyright Reform, despite public protests and loud opposition from platforms such as GitHub, Google, Reddit and Wikipedia. Dark day for internet freedom: The @Europarl_EN has rubber-stamped copyright reform including #Article13 and #Article11. MEPs refused to even consider amendments. The results of the final vote: 348 in favor, 274 against #SaveYourInternet pic.twitter.com/8bHaPEEUk3 — Julia Reda (@Senficon) March 26, 2019 Today’s plenary vote was MEPs’ last say on the matter and cements the position of the EU Parliament. The only thing left to make it an official law is for the EU Council to approve…

After snapping up Gimlet Media and Anchor in its bid to enter the podcasting arena, Spotify has just acquired Los Angeles-based studio Parcast, which produces a range of crime- and mystery-focused shows. The studio, which has been around since 2016, already has 18 series under its belt, with imaginative titles like Serial Killers, Unsolved Murders, and Cults. It’s slated to launch 20 new shows this year. Interestingly, it claims that 75 percent of its audience is female. With that, Spotify now has two major content creation teams under its wing for its mission to dominate the podcast market. It remains…

Cryptocurrency exchange DragonEx says it has been hacked, although it is not yet known how much has been lost in the alleged attack. The Singapore-based company announced the news on its official Telegram channel on Monday. In its announcement, the company explained: “On March 24th, DragonEx has [sic] encountered attacks from hackers, our users’ crypto assets and Platform crypto assets were transferred and stolen.” Part of the assets, the statement continues, have already been retrieved. “We will do our best to retrieve back [sic] the rest of the stolen assets,” the company said. The exchange said that several judicial administrations including…

‘Broad Band’ is the best book we’ve read on women in computing

To those unfamiliar with computing history, the world’s first general-purpose computer was the ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer). Made public in 1946, this 30-ton “giant brain” had a military purpose — it was created to help the US Army calculate artillery fire. The ENIAC was operated by six programmers — Kay McNulty, Betty Jennings, Betty Snyder, Marlyn Meltzer, Fran Bilas, and Ruth Lichterman. Handpicked from University of Pennsylvania’s engineering school, these six women were the first “computers” — and were subsequently left out of the celebration over the magical self-computing “giant brain.” And they were hardly an anomaly —…

NASA doesn’t have enough spacesuits for the first all-women spacewalk — so they canceled it

Mar26

Posted In: Around the Web, Space

Earlier this month, NASA announced its plans to conduct its first ever all-women spacewalk with astronauts Christina Koch and Anne McClain. What would have been a giant leap for womankind will have to wait because of issues with women’s spacesuit sizes. Koch and McClain were scheduled to swap out batteries on the outside of the International Space Station this Friday, but NASA canceled it because there was only one medium-size torso outerwear available, and both Koch and McClain wear this size. The mission is currently set to run as planned, with astronaut Nick Hague taking McClain’s place. Some more shots…
