Face-to-face interactions shouldn’t be replaced by digital communication

What with Facetime, Skype, Whatsapp and Snapchat, for many people, face-to-face conversation is used less and less often. These apps allow us to converse with each other quickly and easily – overcoming distances, time zones and countries. We can even talk to virtual assistants such as Alexa, Cortana or Siri – commanding them to play our favorite songs, films, or tell us the weather forecast. Often these ways of communicating reduce the need to speak to another human being. This has led to some of the conversational snippets of our daily lives now taking place mainly via technological devices. So…

Tech companies still care more about AI and IoT than blockchain

Blockchain might be the hot buzzword of the moment, but according to new research, it’s being bested by the Internet-of-Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI). A recent survey conducted by identity management cloud software provider, Okta, found that digital firms are investing in AI and Internet-of-Things over blockchain, Cointelegraph reports. The survey questioned 1,050 IT, security, and engineering decision makers at $1 billion firms. They were asked if their company invests in either AI, augmented reality, blockchain, or Internet-of-Things as part of their “digital transformation strategy.” Decision makers were surveyed between January and February this year. Ninety percent said they…

Defunct cryptocurrency exchange QuadrigaCX’s should enter bankruptcy proceedings in a bid to minimize costs and facilitate the recovery of assets for creditors, according to a report by Ernst & Young (EY), its court appointed monitor. Additionally, the report says that Gerald Cotten, the exchange‘s late founder, appeared to mix personal and business affairs, and that he could have used the company‘s funds to acquire assets outside the business. In the report, EY also said the possibility of Quadriga coming out of restructuring appeared remote, adding that the investigation to recover assets could be handled more efficiently in bankruptcy. As part of the bankruptcy…

It’s about time we got Afro emoji — these women are making it happen

Various communities have finally been represented in emoji form, from interracial couples to the trans community and those living with disabilities. But while there seems to be an emoji to represent everyone and everything, a significant group has been completely left out — people with Afros. Writer an emoji activist Rhianna Jones is on a mission to change that. She’s collected over 37,000 signatures with her campaign ‘Let’s Make the Afro Emoji Happen #AfroHairMatters’ for 2020. Hey Twitter! If you think #AfroHairMatters, let’s make the Afro Hair Emoji happen! I’m submitting an official design proposal to Apple + Unicode this…

Bloomberg report explains why YouTube hosts so much toxic content

Apr03

Yesterday, Bloomberg’s Mark Bergen published a devastating piece charting how the once-innocuous YouTube became the world’s most effective radicalization machine, in the process becoming a haven for conspiracy theorists and actual honest-to-god paedophiles. The reason is… well, it’s not even remotely surprising. In short, YouTube sacrificed good governance and responsible stewardship at the altar of growth. According to the report (which is summarised nicely here, if you’re short on time) , YouTube’s CEO Susan Wojcicki and other company executives established ambitious goals for growth and engagement. Indeed, Wojcicki’s tenure began with an ambitious target: one billion daily hours of watch…
