It’s a great week for productivity. First, Slack announced that it’ll let you view documents without leaving the app, and then Dropbox enabled editing Google Docs within its own cloud storage app. Now, Google has announced that you can edit Microsoft Office files directly in Google’s suite of apps, without converting them or messing up your formatting. Earlier, you either had to convert Office files to formats supported by Google Docs, or use Office Compatibility Mode (OCM) with limited functionality. Now, you don’t need to worry about that. Astronomers today published the first ever images of a celestial phenomenon we’ve long known to exist, but were unable to capture: a black hole. And it’s thanks, in large part, to the algorithms created by Katie Bouman. Bouman, a graduate student at Harvard, worked with a team of three fellow researchers to create to develop the algorithms that made the image possible. Together, the team utilized enough image data to fill thousands of hard drives, seamlessly stitching together photos from eight telescopes — located in Hawaii, Chile, Mexico, Spain, Arizona, and the Antarctic — to create the image released today.…

YouTube TV’s looking more like a cable package every day

Google today announced the price of YouTube TV was going up from $40 to $50, in return for 8 more channels. The service, one of many which bills itself as an alternative to cable packages, is starting to look very similar to those same packages — and, like all tv streaming services, the prices are going to keep going up if it wants to offer more channels. As the trade-off for a $10 price increase, Google is offering a new suite of Discovery channels.
