Actually, reading books on a phone is great

As a physical book apologist, it pains me to write this. I love books. I love the unwieldy weight, the slowly yellowing pages, the (ugh, sorry for the cliché) smell, and the fact that I can look at a stack and recall where and when I read each of them. But I have found a new love. Now book on phone is my best friend. Ever since my son was born, my life has taken an uninvited turn for the practical. And from a purely pragmatic view, ingesting letters from a heavy cuboid that requires multiple hands to continue reading,…

AI is helping regulators keep tabs on new industrial farms and their waste discharging habits

Researchers have developed an algorithm that uses satellite imagery to rapidly pinpoint industrial livestock farms, manifold faster than humans can do by manually analyzing maps. Now, the researchers think their new analytical tool could help regulators to identify farms that may be breaking environmental laws. The research, led by a team from Stanford University, was premised on the fact that intensive animals farms are notoriously difficult to monitor and regulate in the United States – while also being a huge source of freshwater pollution. Over 40 percent of the country’s livestock now comes from concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs), defined as sites…

Law enforcers from around the globe seem to finally be getting up to speed with tackling cryptocurrency crimes. But it seems the lure of Bitcoin is still too much for some, even for those that should be protecting citizens from cyber-criminals. An operation to rid the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) of corrupt officials has reached a crescendo. Two FSB agents involved in a Bitcoin extortion scam were arrested last week, a local news outlet reports. Two law enforcement agents, Sergei Belousov and Aleksey Kolbov, are being charged with fraud totaling 65 million rubles ($1 million), according to another report.…
