Microsoft says modern.ie has helped save developers 1 million hours testing for IE in just one year

Microsoft launched modern.IE at the end of January 2013 to help ease the pain points of developing for its browser. Today, the company says the site has saved developers over 1 million hours testing for Internet Explorer, especially for those who don’t use Windows and/or who need to work with older versions of the browser.

The company explains how it got the figure: over 750,000 developers have used the site’s virtualization tools. If you compare that to building a VM from scratch, they have saved an average of 1 hour and 20 minutes by using pre-configured VMs and 2 hours and 48 minutes using Browserstack. Not bad Microsoft, not bad at all.

Firespotter Labs has integrated its UberConference call service with Google Hangouts. While Google currently permits inviting phone participants to a voice call, it’s limited in scope — with UberConference, up to 100 people may join the call.

UberConference CEO and cofounder Craig Walker said in a statement, “We’ve created an entirely new way for people to hold audio conference calls, and Hangouts has done the same for video. The two integrated together deliver a groundbreaking conferencing experience you can’t find anywhere else.”

Under this partnership, users can add UberConference to their Hangout by simply enabling the UberConference app from within the Hangouts Apps Menu. Once added, the UberConference sidebar will display all the controls you need. UberConference is also providing the phone numbers needed for anyone to hop on a call to join a hangout.

In addition, call organizers will be able to see and manage voice-only participants. All Hangout calls will be published as a Hangout app and can be accessed toll-free from the 40 countries supported by UberConference.

This feature is free for up to 10 voice callers with a dial-in number and PIN. However, businesses can spend $10 per user per month in exchange for a dedicated dial-in number (sans PIN) and support for up to 100 voice callers.

This is the second integration UberConference has made this year with a Google service — in January, it added support for Google Drive, allowing anyone to share and edit documents during a call.

Codacy Codacy launches to help developers monitor problematic code

Codacy launched in private beta back in November, offering developers a code review tool that automatically monitors patterns to unearth potentially problematic code further down the line. And today, Codacy is shedding its beta tags and launching to the public.

Since launch, more than 1,300 developers have signed up to the platform, with an average of one million lines of code analyzed every day. We’re told that Codacy will be integrating with “key Continuous Integration tools” this year, as well as launching its own command line tool.

Full pricing has also now been revealed for the public launch – $14.99, $49.99 and $149.99 per month for a person, team (5 people) and company respectively. However, you can receive a whole month for free if you sign up using this link – exclusively for TNW readers.

Moves for iPhone now lets you track more than 60 types of activity, from ballet to boxing

02 Week view 220x390 Moves for iPhone now lets you track more than 60 types of activity, from ballet to boxingActivity-tracking app Moves has always been able to automatically detect walking, running, cycling and movement by motorized transport, but a new update for the iPhone today brings with it support for more than 60 new activity types.

While users will have to manually label time spent on these activities for now, developer Protogeo plans to add automatic tracking for as many of these as it can in the future, based on the user data it receives. So, whether you’ve been gym training, paintballing, rollerblading, swimming or practically any other activity you can think of, Moves will now let you keep track of it. The development cycle of the Android version is a little behind the iOS app, so we’d expect the feature to hit Google’s platform in the not too distant future.
