Klout reportedly to be acquired by social marketing company Lithium Technologies

161459597 1 520x245 Klout reportedly to be acquired by social marketing company Lithium Technologies

Klout is reportedly being acquired by the social marketing company Lithium Technologies. Sources tell Re/code that the deal is in the “low nine figures” for the company that help tells users how influential they are.

Over the past few years, Lithium has acquired multiple social companies, including social content-filtering service Kelbi Technologies in 2009, Scout Labs back in 2010 for $20 million, and social customer care platform Social Dynamx in 2012. Adding an influence measurement into the mix could be an wanted feature for enterprise users.

Klout is already integrated into multiple enterprise services, including Salesforce, Hootsuite, and Microsoft’s Yammer. But what Lithium Technologies may find appealing is the connection Klout has with Bing’s real-time data feed, thanks to the company’s partnership with Microsoft. Of course, let’s not forget the 15 billion pieces of data that Klout consumes every day — that must be also appealing for Lithium, or any other company.

Some may view this acquisition as a blessing for Klout, which has spent much of its company life defending itself from criticism that its influence score wasn’t relevant. However, it has been making strides to improve its service and last week rolled out a new version that shifts away from just displaying a score by encouraging users to post original content.

The news also comes at a point when Klout is about to become profitable. Company CEO Joe Fernandez said that all of its revenue comes from enterprise customers interested in giving away perks or using its interface to find out who’s influential in their space.

If the reports are true, then it would mark the first time a social influence measurement company made a successful exit. Among Klout’s competitors include Kred/PeopleBrowsr, PeerIndex, and Twitter Grader.

In terms of funding, Klout has raised $40 million in venture capital, backed by Mayfield Fund, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Microsoft, Venrock Capital, CrunchFund, and many other investors.

We’ve reached out to Klout for comment and will update this if we hear back.

Update: Fernandez declined to comment on the report.

Shuffler.fm doubles-down on curation with an all-new multimedia music magazine for iPad

20140211 132944 520x245 Shuffler.fm doubles down on curation with an all new multimedia music magazine for iPad

“Shuffler.fm is a music discovery service designed to help users navigate the music shared by blogs in a visual way,” wrote TNW’s Martin Bryant way back in 2011, just as it had launched for iPad. Almost a year later, it brought the Flipboard-esque browsing experience to iPhone too.

Now, however, Shuffler.fm says its “doubling down on its curation, filtering and context vision”, by launching an all-new standalone iPad app called PAUSE, serving up a quarterly review of the best new music. For launch today, PAUSE kicks off with the best of 2013: A Year In Music, and then will offer four editions throughout 2014.

Basically, PAUSE is a curation of the already-curated music service, so this in theory should offer the crème de la crème of the best new music. It highlights the best songs, videos, albums and charts, as well as some of the best music writing from the likes of Pitchfork, The Fader, Fact magazine, Resident Advisor, XLR8R, DUMMY, among others.

PAUSE is live in the App Store now, though we’re told that there is currently issues with the audio links – this will be remedied in an update that should be pushed out in the next few days.

Google’s voice search on Android now lets you set and refer to relationships for your contacts

Google today announced a new Google Now feature: setting and referring to relationships for your Android contacts. Instead of scrolling through your contacts, or referring to them by their name, you can now just say “Ok Google, call Mom” or “OK Google, send a text to my wife.”

Call Mom Googles voice search on Android now lets you set and refer to relationships for your contacts

I don’t have a wife, but when I asked Google to “call my wife” it prompted me to pick a contact that would then be set under that term. Unfortunately, when I tried setting someone up as “Captain Awesome,” it wouldn’t let me and simply performed a Web search. This is separate from the Google Search for Android update released just last week, which added smarter time-to-leave cards as well as the “OK, Google” hotword option in the UK and Canada.
