After 15 months, Windows 8 has sold 100 million fewer copies than Windows 7 did

windows 81 520x245 After 15 months, Windows 8 has sold 100 million fewer copies than Windows 7 did

While consumers are certainly still buying Windows 8, the latest and greatest operating system from Microsoft is not getting the same amount of love as Windows 7 did. That seems to be the general consensus, but now there’s data straight from the horse’s mouth to back that claim: at 15 months, Windows 8 sold 100 million fewer licenses than Windows 7 did, according to Microsoft’s own sales figures.

Microsoft today revealed that Windows 8 has passed the 200 million mark. The two operating systems grew at the same rate for their respective first six months, but then at some point things slowed down for Windows 7′s successor:

windows 7 windows 8 15 months After 15 months, Windows 8 has sold 100 million fewer copies than Windows 7 did

We can’t say when exactly the slowdown occurred because Microsoft didn’t share any new Windows 8 sales numbers between 100 million (six months) and 200 million (15 months). We can, however, point out that 2013 saw the worst yearly decline in PC shipments ever, so it shouldn’t be too surprising that Microsoft wasn’t eager to update anyone at 12 months. What we do know is broken down below.

Windows 7 launched on October 22, 2009. In October 2010, Microsoft revealed that it had sold over 240 million Windows 7 licenses in the operating system’s first year, and in January 2011 that number grew to 300 million at the 15-month mark.

Windows 8 launched on October 26, 2012. In February 2014, Microsoft revealed that it had sold over 200 million Windows 8 licenses in the operating system’s 15 months. No matter how you slice it, that’s not good news for the company.

What’s next? Microsoft is going to continue pushing updates for Windows 8 in the coming months (Windows 8.1 is already out and Windows 8.1 Update 1 is on its way), up until it’s ready to release Windows 9. The company is expected to talk about both at its Build conference between April 2 and 4 in San Francisco.

Luxi turns your iPhone into an incident light meter

luxi 1 520x245 Luxi turns your iPhone into an incident light meter

If you want to take your photography up a notch without spending big bucks, the $29.95 Luxi attachment for your iPhone can help. It’s a small dome that slides over the front-facing camera in order to turn it into an incident light meter.

Professional photographers likely already have a standalone light meter, which can cost hundreds of dollars, but Luxi gets you started at a fraction of the cost and without having to carry around another bulky device.

luxi 2 520x353 Luxi turns your iPhone into an incident light meter

Incident light meters work by measuring how much light a subject receives, rather than how much it reflects. Holding the meter up to your subject provides you with suggested camera settings to properly expose the shot.

Luxi, which comes in iPhone 4/4s and iPhone 5/5s, models pairs with an accompanying iPhone app to show you readings. You can also use any other light meter apps that rely on the front camera, but not all of them have been specifically designed with Luxi in mind.

Based on our limited tests, the meter is accurate. If you’re having trouble, you can calibrate the meter to your camera by measuring its readings against your camera’s auto settings and adjusting sliders from within the Luxi app.

Luxi probably isn’t going to replace the dedicated light meters found in serious photographers’ kits, but it’s a convenient accessory that puts the device you already own to work for you.

Jelly for iOS now lets you delete content and find questions when no one around you is asking

111288277 520x245 Jelly for iOS now lets you delete content and find questions when no one around you is asking

Jelly has released an iOS app update for its mobile Q&A service that appears aimed at bolstering engagement and giving you greater control over your content. Users can now mute commenters and even delete their own content permanently.

Lastly, the company has a new “I’m Feeling Helpful” option that will be displayed when there’s no one around you that needs a question answered — this is the service’s version of Google’s “I’m Feeling Lucky” to apparently help show there’s more value to be had with its app.

Jelly launched in January as a product of Twitter co-founder Biz Stone’s thinking. It’s a service that crowdsources answers by leveraging friends and those that follow you across various social networks. While its initial launch may have caused some to view it as just another Quora, Stone said that the app was still in its infancy and was in it for the long haul.

Citing a small team, Stone has admitted that the company had to withhold some features from being released, but promised that the app would be updated often — the features in today’s update are most likely part of that plan. However, it’s important to note that they have not yet been made available for Android.

Documents 520x245 8 SaaS products for managing customer data

Amassing customer data is pretty meaningless if you have no organized way to analyze it. There are so many tools out there for startup founders, however, that I wanted to find out which were actually being used to deliver the kind of practical insight a business owner needs.

So I asked eight founders (all members of YEC) the following:

What is the best SaaS product on the market for managing large amounts of customer data for your business?)

Their answers are below:

jared brown 8 SaaS products for managing customer data1. Intercom

Intercom is the single most important tool we use. With Intercom we easily keep in touch with our customers. It makes it incredibly easy to have one-on-one discussions with them.

The most important trick we implemented was to find paying customers who have been inactive for a few weeks. Intercom then sends us an email with the lifetime value, location, etc., so we can reach out to them directly. It has increased retention by 32 percent.
– Jared Brown, Hubstaff

James Simpson 8 SaaS products for managing customer data2. Mixpanel

We would honestly be lost without Mixpanel. Not only does Mixpanel give us incredibly valuable insights into trends, usage, funnels and retention of our users as a whole, but also it lets us dig deep into specific users to serve them better.

It is as much a tool for tracking and gaining insights from data as it is a tool for tasks such as reengaging users, email marketing, customer support and so much more.
– James Simpson, GoldFire Studios

8 SaaS products for managing customer data3. Customer.io

We use Customer.io for our business and writer engagement emails. We have user segments in place when they first sign up, become inactive, when they’ve completed a survey, etc.

We send them tons of user activity, and they manage the logic to send emails at the right times. It makes sending targeted, relevant emails a breeze.
– Ryan Buckley, Scripted, Inc.

lawrence watkins 8 SaaS products for managing customer data4. Infusionsoft

Not only does Infusionsoft allow you to manage customer data, but it also allows you to act on that data in an intelligent way. With Infusionsoft, it is easy to tag every click, page visit or form a customer completes on your website, social media platform or email you send out.

Certain high-value actions from a customer can automatically trigger responses to increase your conversion rate and ROI. It is a little complicated to use at first, but it becomes very powerful when you learn your way around the software.
– Lawrence Watkins, Great Black Speakers

Alfredo Atanacio 8 SaaS products for managing customer data5. Salesforce.com

Salesforce.com is super simple and very functional. There are a lot of other CRMs out there, but I like it to keep things simple.
– Alfredo Atanacio, Uassist.ME

doreen bloch 8 SaaS products for managing customer data6. Nimble

The name of this service says it all. Be more nimble with your customer data by using a great CRM tool such as Nimble. This program makes it easy to import and export customer lists, tag customers, edit their contact information and set reminders to get back in touch.

I also really appreciate how fast it is to navigate the database, which is important when you’re handling a large volume of customer contacts.
– Doreen Bloch, Poshly Inc.

Joseph P. DeWoody 8 SaaS products for managing customer data7. KISSmetrics

KISSmetrics is a great tool for turning data into action.
– Joseph P. DeWoody, Clear Fork Royalty

Ben Kirshner 8 SaaS products for managing customer data8. RJ Metrics

RJ Metrics offers businesses intelligence software, retention metrics and customer acquisition delivered as a service over the Internet for e-commerce and SaaS businesses.
– Ben Kirshner, Elite SEM Inc

Editorially to shut down its collaborative writing service on May 30

Feb13
by Sindy Cator on February 13, 2014 at 6:24 pm

editorially 220x56 Editorially to shut down its collaborative writing service on May 30Editorially has announced plans to close its Web-based collaborative document product after failing to gain enough traction for it.

The service, which opened to the public last September, will slink off into the night on May 30. Users will have until then to export their data. If you’re looking for an alternative, Quip and Penflip are good options.

The Editorially team said it had planned to begin charging for the service, but even if its existing users switched to premium, it wouldn’t have enough revenue to keep going.
