"Widespread apathy to the Grimsvotn Volcano eruption in Iceland is reflected by the Mild interest it raised in Google Trends. This demonstrates the weakness a story on the web if it does not include babes, cyberculture, or relationships. In other words, Iceland may regret that it is not led by a nefarious womanizer like Arnold Schwarzenegger." ~ Yasha Harari

Vodafone hits 500,000 4G subscribers in the UK, one month faster than its rival EE

Vodafone1 645x250 520x245 Vodafone hits 500,000 4G subscribers in the UK, one month faster than its rival EE

Vodafone today announced that it has 500,000 4G customers in the UK, only six months after launching its “Red 4G-ready plans”.

The milestone is notable because EE, the first 4G network in the UK, took a little over seven months to accrue the same number of subscribers. It’s perhaps unfair to compare the two though – since EE launched its 4G offerings in October 2012, there is now a better understanding among consumers about what to expect from a 4G service. There are also more 4G-compatible devices available in the UK, which only adds to the appeal of a 4G contract.

At the time, EE was an entirely new brand – although it had Orange and T-Mobile customers to draw from –  while Vodafone has been able to lean on its existing reputation to attract new subscribers.

The carrier has also been wise to differentiate from its 4G competitors – which also include O2 and Three – by offering a free, two-year subscription for either Spotify Premium or Sky Sports Mobile TV.

Nevertheless, the take-up of new 4G Vodafone contracts shows that it hasn’t been affected by EE’s head start in the UK. The carrier is now able to deliver its 4G network to 36 percent of the UK population – including 208 cities, towns and districts – and is now targeting indoor coverage for 98 percent by the end of 2015.

Mt. Gox will resume withdrawals ‘soon’ after creating fix to track modified Bitcoin transactions

Bitcoin exchange Mt. Gox hopes to resume withdrawals “soon” after developing a fix for a vulnerability that allowed users to alter transaction details and make it seem like a payment was never completed.

Mt. Gox suspended withdrawals on February 7, before explaining the “transaction malleability” to its users only a few days later. The loophole affects the virtual currency for other payment processor too – Bitstamp, the largest Bitcoin exchange – reinstated withdrawals last week after it was forced to implement a similar suspension.

In a statement, Mt. Gox said the workaround will use a “unique identifier” developed by the team at blockchain.info to show whether a transaction has been modified or not. The worry is that this would create a loophole where the payment was sent a second time, incorrectly.

“With this new system in place, Mt. Gox should be able to resume withdrawals soon,” it said. “At the beginning we will do so at a moderated pace and with new daily and monthly limits in place to prevent any problems with the new system and to take into account current market conditions.”

Mt. Gox is now re-indexing the Blockchain – the public database for that records all Bitcoin transactions – and testing a new withdrawal queue system for the digital currency. While a concrete timeframe wasn’t given, the Bitcoin exchange says it’ll issue a further update by this Thursday (February 20).

Applying NumberFormat Version 4

Feb17
by Sindy Cator on February 17, 2014 at 12:00 pm
Posted In: Around the Web, Formatting, Keyboard

I’ve been using a macro to apply the comma style for about five years. I’ve even enhanced it. It’s such a simple bit of code that it really never broke – until now. I got a workbook that caused the code to fail because it didn’t have a style named ‘Comma’. I just assumed that style was built in to all workbooks.

I received a workbook in 2003 format (.xls). I Saved As to 2010 format (.xlsx) because that’s what I always do. I even closed and re-opened it because I don’t like it when it says ‘Compatibility Mode’ in the title. Here’s what the Styles gallery looks like compared to the Styles gallery on a new workbook below.

OK, somebody deleted the number format styles. Seems strange, but I’ve seen stranger. Then more strangeness occurred. None of the cells on this unprotected worksheet were locked. And when I add a new worksheet to the workbook, every cell on the new worksheet was unlocked. I don’t recall ever seeing that before. Generally, every cell on a new worksheet is locked and the sheet is unprotected. That way when you protect a worksheet, you get expected behavior.

I still don’t understand why this workbook behaves the way it does, but I do need to change my code to account for it. I toyed with the idea of adding a Comma style if it didn’t exist, but the Comma style is just a number format, so I didn’t see any downside to just applying a number format instead of a style. Also, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my new toggle feature for PivotItems that switches between zero and two decimal places and applied that same logic to cells.

Sub MakeComma()

    Dim pf As PivotField

    Const sONEDECIMAL As String = "#,##0"
    Const sTWODECIMALS As String = "#,##0.00"
    Const sCOMMAONE As String = "_(* #,##0_);_(* (#,##0);_(* ""-""_);_(@_)"
    Const sCOMMATWO As String = "_(* #,##0.00_);_(* (#,##0.00);_(* ""-""??_);_(@_)"

    gclsAppEvents.AddLog "^m", "MakeComma"

    If TypeName(Selection) = "Range" Then
        On Error Resume Next
            Set pf = ActiveCell.PivotField
        On Error GoTo 0

        If pf Is Nothing Then
            If Selection.NumberFormat = sCOMMATWO Then
                Selection.NumberFormat = sCOMMAONE
            Else
                Selection.NumberFormat = sCOMMATWO
            End If
        Else
            If pf.NumberFormat = sTWODECIMALS Then
                pf.NumberFormat = sONEDECIMAL
            Else
                pf.NumberFormat = sTWODECIMALS
            End If
        End If
    End If

End Sub
