Huawei unveils the Ascend G6, a skinny 4G-enabled Android smartphone

HK68703 520x245 Huawei unveils the Ascend G6, a skinny 4G enabled Android smartphone

Huawei today unveiled the Ascend G6, a new mid-range Android handset with optional 4G connectivity. The handset follows the industrial design of the Ascend P6, which Huawei claimed to be the world’s slimmest Android smartphone when it launched in June last year. It weighs 115 grams and is only 7.85mm thin, which is slightly thicker than the P6 (6.18mm) but still delightfully slim in its own right.

The Ascend G6 has a 4.5-inch display set at a 960×540 resolution (245 pixels-per-inch) and is powered by a quad-core 1.2 GHz processor and a 2000 mAh battery. It packs an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera and is 4G LTE-enabled, supporting up to 150 Mbps, although a 3G-only version will also be available.

The 4G version of the Ascend G6 will be available in black with grey and rose gold highlights, or white with pink or champagne gold highlights, from April this year. The 3G-only model will arrive in black, white, pink, gold or blue during the first quarter of 2014.

Huawei teased the Ascend P7 in an unusual video last week, which poked fun at both Apple and Samsung ahead of its press conference at Mobile World Congress. The short clip, which used an iPhone and Apple’s Siri search assistant to hint at its latest hardware, also referenced two new tablets – we expect Huawei will give us the full details on these soon enough.

Huawei 520x245 Huawei launches pocket friendly MediaPad X1 and M1 Android tablets at MWC 2014

Huawei has announced two new Android tablets – the MediaPad X1 and MediaPad M1 – at Mobile World Congress 2014 in Barcelona today.

The MediaPad X1, which was heavily rumored ahead of the event, has a 7-inch, 1080p HD display (323PPI) and a 1.6GHz quad-core processor.

Internal storage is pegged at 16GB, there’s on-board 4G LTE connectivity and the battery is a whopping 5,000mAh, which the company claims will last for “five full days of continuous use” or around 15 hours of video playback without missing a beat.

Notably, the rear camera is considerably better specced than for most tablets – at 13 megapixels – and there’ also a better-than-average 5-megapixel snapper on the front.

In order to help the device stand out from the reams of other Android tablets available, Huawei has also added a few custom software tweaks to the device through its custom Emotion UI.

The company has also clearly worked hard to give the MediaPad X1 a chance of being competitive against its Nexus 7 rival, shown through the introduction of a 1920 x 1200 pixel display. It should also be pretty bag and pocket friendly too, weighing in at just under 240 grams and measuring around 7.1mm thick.

The Huawei MediaPad X1 will be available in China, Russia, Western Europe, the Middle East, Japan and Latin America from March 2014, the company said.

MediaPad M1

The second device, the MediaPad M1, is an 8-inch 1,280 x 800 pixel HD IPS display, dual front-facing speakers and has a claimed battery life of up to eight hours video playback, according to the company.

Like the MediaPad X1, it also comes with the option of popping in a SIM card for 4G data access and also like its sibling, shouldn’t weigh you down too much either, although it is a little heavier (at 329 grams) due to its aluminium body.

On the rear there’s a 5-megapixel camera, while you’ll find a 1-megapixel affair on the front for stills and video calling.

The Huawei MediaPad M1 will be available from “Q1 2014″ – so before the end of March – in Europe, Russia, the Middle East, China, Japan, Asia Pacific, Australia and Latin America. The M1 will be priced from €299.

Huawei is getting into the wearables game. The Chinese hardware manufacturer today launched the TalkBand B1 at Mobile World Congress, a wrist-worn device with an intriguing 1.4-inch flexible OLED display.

The device is catered towards fitness enthusiasts, as it gives owners the ability to track steps, distance traveled and calories burned on a daily basis. Similar to other fitness trackers such as the Fitbit One, the TalkBand B1 will also monitor sleep phases to ensure owners wake up in tune with their body clock.

To stand out from the crowd, Huawei is also equipping each unit with a Bluetooth 4.1 earpiece to help people take calls while they’re on the move. It’ll support Android (version 2.3 and higher) and iOS (version 5.0 and higher) devices and sync wirelessly over NFC.

The wearable isn’t a surprise, however. One of the company’s executives posted a photo of the TalkBand B1 on the Chinese social network Weibo, with the caption: “My new toy. Do you like this color?”

The Talkband B1 will be available in China, Russia, the Middle East, Japan, Latin America and parts of Europe from March 2014.

Why you should pay attention to these 8 emerging tech hubs

82090013 520x245 Why you should pay attention to these 8 emerging tech hubs

This post originally appeared on the TransferWise blog. TransferWise is the clever new way to transfer money between countries, from the people the people who built Skype and PayPal.

From Silicon Valley to Silicon Alley, and Berlin’s hip coffee shops to East London’s Silicon Roundabout, the world is well versed in the global innovation boom towns. But have you heard of what’s going on in Cyprus, Sweden or North Carolina?

Today, with the decentralising nature of the Internet, distributed cloud technology and a growing sentiment toward entrepreneurship, the global startup ecosystem has never been so dispersed.

What’s the magic formula that helps a city to incubate innovation? Is it the low rent prices, stable infrastructure, education facilities or weather conditions? Perhaps it’s a complex algorithm of all of the above?

From the Far East to the Mediterranean, we found eight cities where technology’s influence is growing by the minute, and the world should start paying close attention.

1. Eindhoven, Netherlands

bikes 520x347 Why you should pay attention to these 8 emerging tech hubs

Dubbed by Forbes as the most inventive city in the world due to its “patent intensity”, Eindhoven is a hotbed for hardware design and high-tech innovation.

In the future, biodegradable implants known as Bioneedles may replace the syringe, needle and vial vaccination – a reduction of HIV infection and hepatitis are among the benefits attributed to this cheap and safe technology. And this is just one of the many pioneering technologies surfacing out of this mid-sized Southern city of the Netherlands.

It’s home to hot startups like leading 3D printing marketplace Shapeways, interactive education service Gynzy and real-time advertising platform Flxone.

2. Pune, India

Move over Bangalore, there’s a new Indian metropolis evolving with its finger on the pulse of cloud, mobile and digital technologies. With its young demographic, acclaimed university, flourishing nightlife and convenient connection to the financial centre of Mumbai, Pune is attracting a pool of startups and fresh IT talent.

Startups range from award-winning data software Druva to telecommunication hardware Swipe. Known as India’s first ‘Wi-Fi City’ after the Unwiring Pune project was instigated in 2006, the city’s Wi-Fi coffee shop culture and affordable standard of living add to its entrepreneurial appeal.

3. Nicosia, Cyprus

city 520x265 Why you should pay attention to these 8 emerging tech hubs

Despite its recent financial crisis, the WIPO cites Cyprus as a country showing great potential in intellectual property and technology output. Companies like NCR and TSYS have caught on, choosing the Mediterranean island capital for their regional headquarters.

With its high per-capita income, favourable tax system, sophisticated infrastructure and low business set-up costs the possibilities are prime in Cyprus. Bitcoin marketers Neo & Bee will open their first real-life branch in Nicosia later this month, a place where the use of the virtual currency is already creeping into everyday life.

4. Dublin, Ireland

Google, Facebook, Amazon, and Linkedin have all established their European headquarters in this Irish capital. Lower taxes and living costs, in comparison to its English neighbour, are what urged this move originally.

But now more and more tech companies cite a pool of talent and the Irish Venture Capital Association’s investment tendencies as reasons for the city’s appeal. Accelerator facilities like Dog Patch Labs, launched by leading US venture capital firm Polaris Venture Partners, host music discovery platform Seevl, Guitar Hero-like software Riffstation and big data management tool Logentries, to name a few.

The city also hosts the must-go tech conferences Web Summit and F.ounders.

5. Raleigh, North Carolina

Affordable housing, short commutes and the title of No.1 U.S. city for young families are all triggers for the flock of technology companies and university graduates to Raleigh.

Over the past two decades, Raleigh has experienced the third-highest job growth and second-highest population increase in the country. It’s also part of the North Carolina Research Triangle, one of the most prominent U.S. research parks pioneering in IT and biotechnology.

The region (known as Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill) is anchored by cutting-edge research institutions from surrounding universities, growing high-tech companies like Bandwith and Yealink as well as Fortune 100 companies IBM, Cisco, Sony Ericsson and many more.

6. Hong Kong

hk 520x346 Why you should pay attention to these 8 emerging tech hubs

Beijing may be the historical innovation hotspot of the Far East, but recently this focus has shifted to Hong Kong. Its easy-breezy business climate paired with incredibly fast Internet speeds, a lack of censorship and plenty of trading tycoons are all contributing factors its growth.

Hong Kong is a booming breeding ground for startups, with global venture programs like StartMeUpHK offering resources and companies such as Burg Limited paving the way for wearable tech.

7. Malmö, Sweden

Ranked as the fourth on the list of cities with most patent applications per 10,000 residents —after Eindhoven, San Francisco and San Diego— this southern Swedish city is both young and diverse. Almost half of Malmö’s population is under the age of 35 and boasts the highest proportion of foreign-born residents in the country.

The third largest city in the country, it’s situated between the European capital Copenhagen and Swedish university town Lund. The region is teetering on the forefront of IT, mobile technology and life sciences.

Once an industrial town transformed into a nucleus of young innovation, Malmö has attracted startups such as live video-streaming service Bambuser, stock photography platform Foap and micro-donation tool Flattr.

8. Tel Aviv, Israel

Perhaps its no longer as surprising, but with 5,000 startups the Silicon Wadi  (‘Valley’ in Hebrew) of the Mediterranean is certainly worth a mention.

It has the highest density of startups in the world and 61 companies in NASDAQ. From BillGuard’s crowdsourced personal finance security to Wix’s web publishing tool and Cardboard Technologies’ biodegradable bicycle, the startup landscape has a reputation of being the most inventive in the world.

It’s no wonder Google invested top dollar in its 8,000 sq. meter Tel Aviv offices.

What other global cities are being put on the map of innovation? Where in the world will the next hotbed of tech or financial genius emerge?

Perhaps we’ll be looking to Bangkok, Rio de Janeiro, Luxembourg, Toronto, Auckland, Beirut or Lagos?

Samsung Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo smartwatches will arrive in April, dropping Android for Tizen

It’s been less than six months since Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Gear, but today the firm is back with two new smartwatches that run on the Tizen operating system, rather than Android.

The new Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo will arrive in April, with a 1.63-inch AMOLED display and 4GB of internal storage. Samsung has upgraded the single-core 800MHz processor from the original Galaxy Gear to a dual-core 1GHz version, and equipped both with a 300mAh battery and 512MB of RAM.

08 Gear 2 orange 2 730x504 Samsung Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo smartwatches will arrive in April, dropping Android for Tizen

The Gear 2 Neo is likely to be the cheaper of the two, given it ships without the 2.0-megapixel camera found in the Gear 2. Samsung has also fitted the optics just above the watchface this time around – a welcome improvement over the bulbous strap found in the original Galaxy Gear.

Aside from the camera and their industrial design, the two wearables appear to be almost identical. The new camera placement means that Samsung can also offer interchangeable straps for both models; Charcoal Black and Wild Orange will be available for both, while the Gold Brown and Mocha Grey color variants will be exclusive to the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo respectively.

Samsung says both models will support more than a dozen of its Galaxy-branded smartphones at launch, which is a huge improvement over the original Galaxy Gear. PayPal, Evernote, Feedly, Path and Line will be among the first apps to support the two new Tizen-based smartwatches.
