Hands-on with the Nokia X Android-based smartphone

NokiaX 3 520x245 Hands on with the Nokia X Android based smartphone

Nokia finally launching an Android-based handset might not be the biggest surprise given the number of leaks leading up to Mobile World Congress this year, but there’s a world of difference between leaks and rumors and using the device in the flesh, so we went hands on to see what the device had to offer at first glance.

With just a 1GHz processor on board, I hadn’t expected it to perform particularly snappily – and indeed, it’s not quite as fast as a high-end smartphone when navigating around, but then, priced at less than €90, it doesn’t attract the same kind of cash commitment either.

That’s not to say it lags horribly in normal use either. We’ll need to take a more detailed look at the device to see how well it handles multitasking when you have lots of apps open at once.

NokiaX 730x823 Hands on with the Nokia X Android based smartphone

Like the Asha range, it features the Fastlane UI that provides a chronological list of everything you’ve done with the phone so you can quickly jump to anything you need to access again.  I actually really like this feature, so it’s good to see it making its way up the hardware chain a little and outside of Asha-branded devices.

Rather than adopt the standard Android home screen, the page is split into Live Tile-esque icons, although they’re not actually live tiles and won’t update automatically in the same way.

Similarly, rather than have a sea of apps and numerous possible home screens, scrolling left or right from the main screen takes you to the Fastlane UI. Carry on scrolling and you’re returned back to the main home screen. No matter which direction you go in, the home screen has infinite horizontal scroll between them.

It makes sense that Nokia would want to differentiate the experience of using a Nokia X from any other Android smartphone through a custom UI, and as the devices are aimed primarily at growth  markets, there’s a good chance that this will be the first fully-fledged smartphone that some users will touch. So it equally makes sense to keep the main menus and home screens straightforward and uncluttered.

Similarly, it’s no prom queen in terms of size or weight but it’s also not excessive by any means, and whether you like the slightly blocky industrial design of the device is down to you – either way, it’s very much in keeping with the rest of Nokia’s line-up. It also doesn’t feel quite as cheap as I feared it might with its all plastic chassis and relatively low price tag.

Unfortunately, with patchy WiFi on the show floor at MWC 2014 and no opportunity to see what photographs look like on a larger screen, it’s hard to say how well the camera perfoms – we’ll have to wait to get a full review model for more on this, but don’t go expecting Lumia-like performance.

The XL offers much of the same experience – with little to no obvious differences when actually using it from the Nokia X – but with a larger 5-inch display.

Overall, the Nokia X family is an interesting development for the Finnish company – and at first look seems like it could satisfy some buyers’ desire for a Nokia branded Android phone. However, if what you really wanted was a Lumia camera phone running the Android OS, then you’re left wanting.  We’ll have a full review up of the Nokia X devices in the near future.

Sony unveiled its Core fitness tracker and SmartBand accessory at CES last month, but today it has a global release date: March 2014.

The hardware hasn’t changed since the original reveal, although Sony did expand upon what it’s describing as the ‘SmartWear Experience’. This centers on the upcoming Lifelog app, which will give Android users the ability to review their activity, where they’ve traveled and progress towards specified goals.

Sony says the hardware will also embrace actions outside of the fitness space too, such as places the user has visited and music, books and video games they’ve been listening, reading or playing recently.

The Japanese firm also showed some concept designs for third-party accessories from the likes of Elecom, Simplism and Colors. While these weren’t confirmed for a retail release, Sony did reveal a limited edition of the SmartBand that will coincide with the FIFA World Cup later this year.

When combined, the Core and SmartBand will also measure sleep patterns, vibrate when a paired smartphone exceeds a certain distance and alert you to incoming calls, texts, tweets and ‘likes’.

‘China’s Twitter’ Sina Weibo is reportedly planning a New York public listing

sina weibo 520x245 Chinas Twitter Sina Weibo is reportedly planning a New York public listing

It’s only been a couple of months since Twitter listed on the New York Stock Exchange as TWTR — and now it seems like Chinese Twitter-like microblogging platform Sina Weibo is set to follow in its footsteps.

Chinese Internet firm Sina is planning a spin-out of its Weibo service, seeking to raise about $500 million in a public listing, the Financial Times reports. The company has already reportedly hired Goldman Sachs and Credit Suisse to handle the IPO in New York, which is expected to be completed in the second quarter.

Sina Weibo’s most recent report claims there are 60.2 million daily active users on the service, which is an 11.2 percent year-on-year increase — but there are signs that they are less engaged than ever in response to China’s efforts to minimize its influence as a free thought platform.

A recent report published by state-affiliated research organization China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) also added on to concerns over the microblogging industry in China. It showed that as of end-2013, the number of total microblogging users in China fell by 27.8 million users, while usage declined by 9.2 percentage points. Though that can be explained away by the decline in Sina Weibo’s competitors — such as Tencent Weibo — people viewed the trend as impacting Sina Weibo as well.

What’s more, messaging service WeChat has been taking away the time users spend on mobile — so much so that Sina previously admitted it believes time spent on Weibo is down because of competition from rival Tencent’s WeChat messaging service.

Taking some steps to diversify, Sina Weibo has started to branch out into offering shopping and payment services after Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba invested $586 million in the service for an 18 percent stake last year.

Given these circumstances, it would be timely for Sina Weibo to attempt an IPO now, which might give it a better valuation than some time later, such as in a year or so.

Intel launches 64-bit Atom processor Merrifield, slates Moorefield for H2 2014, partners with Lenovo, Asus, Foxconn

intel 520x245 Intel launches 64 bit Atom processor Merrifield, slates Moorefield for H2 2014, partners with Lenovo, Asus, Foxconn

At Mobile World Congress in Barcelona today, Intel launched its latest 64-bit Intel Atom Processor (codenamed Merrifield) for smartphones and tablets. The company also disclosed details of its next-generation 64-bit quad core Atom processor for Android mobile devices, codenamed Moorefield.

Merrifield is now known as the Intel Atom processor Z3480. The 64-bit ready SoC is based on Intel’s 22nm Silvermont microarchitecture, runs at 2.13GHz, and the company claims it offers improved battery life. Intel expects Merrifield-based devices from multiple OEMs to launch beginning in the second quarter of this year.

Devices with Moorefield, meanwhile, are expected to be available in the second half of the year. Building on the Merrifield feature set, Moorefield adds two additional Intel architecture (IA) cores for up to 2.3GHz of computing performance, an enhanced GPU, and support for faster memory.

“64 bit computing is moving from the desktop to the mobile device. Intel knows 64-bit computing, and we’re the only company shipping 64-bit processors for mobile devices today capable of supporting both Android and Microsoft Windows,” Intel Corporation President Renee James said in a statement. James emphasized at the event that the company was hoping its technology would push mobile computing into the future.

Intel also announced multi-year agreements with Lenovo, Asus, and Foxconn to expand the availability of Intel-based mobile devices. Here is what each of the three are planning:

  • Lenovo will introduce new Intel-based mobile devices in 2014, and both companies will dedicate engineering resources to building a “variety of smartphone and tablet form factors spanning value to performance market segments.”
  • Asus will bring a full portfolio of Intel-based smartphones and tablets to market this year. In fact, at Mobile World Congress, Asus unveiled the Fonepad 7 LTE (ME3762CL) featuring an Intel Atom processor and Intel LTE connectivity.
  • Foxconn will help build affordable Intel-based Android tablets. Intel will provide Atom processors and communications platforms for a range of Foxconn products, beginning with tablets, this year.

Intel is very much aware that its transition from dominating the desktop world to gaining a foothold in the mobile one will be a long process. That’s exactly why the company is not only pushing new mobile processors, but building relationships to ensure those new chips ship on as many devices as possible.

Yahoo News Digest provides a summary of important news — delivered twice a day, once in the morning and another time in the evening. All the top stories are summarized and presented with key information that is culled from multiple sources.

These pieces of information — called ‘Atoms’ — can be quotes, images, videos, stock tickers, maps, infographics and Wikipedia excerpts among others. The stories are both “algorithmically and hand curated,” Yahoo says.
