"The UN Condemned Israel for its treatment of Palestinians yesterday, disregarding once again the atrocities Palestinians commit against Israel. Little makes a tiny democratic nation prouder than to be verbally attacked in a talking shop consisting mostly of dictators, tyrants and hypocrites." ~ Yasha Harari

How this music YouTube series succeeds at ‘dancing about architecture’

If you look past the raft of misattributed, inspirational quotes plastered over your uncle’s Facebook profile, there are actually some gems out there. You know, phrases that, well, contain actual wisdom. One of these nuggets, and a favorite of mine, is a quote attributed to Martin Mull: “writing about music is like dancing about architecture.” At its core, the quote highlights the difficulties in covering one medium in another. It seems to say that dancing about architecture isn’t easy, but if you could manage it? Well, it’d be a sight to behold. And that sight, friends, is Estelle Caswell’s Earworm. Earworm is a…

‘The world’s most powerful supercomputer’ will realize the full potential of AI

The US Department of Energy (DoE) has announced it’s setting aside $600 million to build the world’s fastest supercomputer called Frontier. It will be jointly developed by AMD and Seattle-based supercomputer specialist Cray. The Frontier supercomputer will be capable of completing more than 1.5 quintillion calculations per second, and will join Aurora to become the second of the two exascale systems planned by US DoE for 2021. To give a sense of scale, a quintillion is a billion billion, or 1,000,000,000,000,000,000. The machine, upon completion in Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), will be about 10 times faster than the current fastest supercomputer, dubbed Summit,…

The Chinese equivalent of WhatsApp, WeChat, has updated its terms of service to ban merchants from fundraising by using tokens or cryptocurrencies. The Tencent-operated chat messaging app quietly revised its policy last month; the new policy will take effect on May 31. Merchants violating the update will have their accounts terminated. Urgh, Wechat just updated its payment policy .. merchant can’t serve any token issuance/fund raising or crypto trading activities, otherwise account will be terminated Given most OTC transactions are happening in wechat, this may impact local liquidity to quite some extent pic.twitter.com/TdNIO6cggS — Dovey Wan 🗝 🦖 (@DoveyWan) May…

Facebook’s approach to fighting fake news is admirable, but not sustainable

May07
by Sindy Cator on May 7, 2019 at 2:19 pm

With the huge EU elections around the corner, the issue of fake news has started to crop up again in headlines — and Facebook seems determined to make up for its mistakes from when the platform was abused in the 2016 US Presidential election. It’s now created a dedicated ‘war room‘ to fight misinformation across the EU, and entered into partnerships with fact-checking organizations. This is a respectable and necessary move on behalf of Facebook. In addition to preventing voters across the continent from being unnecessarily swayed, it could help improve the company’s abysmal reputation — but it simply isn’t…
