Oscar pop! A pop art spin on the 2014 Academy Award nominees

Gravity feat 520x245 Oscar pop! A pop art spin on the 2014 Academy Award nominees

This post originally appeared on the Shutterstock blog, where you can find more inspiration like this.

Last year, our imaginations were so worked up by the films being honored at the Oscars that we asked our design team to create their best Pop Art twists on the Best Picture contenders. And the results were so great that we’re doing it all over again.

2013 was a fantastic year for cinema, delivering a plethora of films notable for their strong emotional impact. Whether they were dealing with the travesties of American history, the emotional disconnection of the future, or the personal trials of family affairs, there were few selections among this year’s nominees that didn’t resonate on a very deep level. Of course, there were the brilliantly constructed capers and spectacles, too, and we didn’t love them the slightest bit less.

Once again, we gave each of our designers their choice of Best Picture nominee to filter through a Pop Art lens (although there may have been a fight or two over who got to tackle a few of them). Armed with their love of big-screen brilliance, art-history savvy, and the endless assets of the Shutterstock library, here’s what they came up with, along with their thoughts on the designs.

AmericanHustle 520x780 Oscar pop! A pop art spin on the 2014 Academy Award nominees

American Hustle by Jami Miles

“Inspired by artist Eduardo Paolozzi‘s collage style, this poster particularly reflects the aesthetics of his 1948 work ‘Dr. Pepper,’ as well as his BUNK series, using popular imagery and elements of surrealism. I wanted to sum up the film and its dramatic yet humorous mood by presenting literal and figurative imagery that played into its brilliant narrative, and Paolozzi’s collage style felt like the perfect way to pull the visual components together.”

nebraska2a 520x780 Oscar pop! A pop art spin on the 2014 Academy Award nominees

Nebraska by Cristin Burton

“Playing off of Warhol’s and other Pop artists’ nod to American consumerism and mass reproduction, this poster features a flat, simple illustration of a motor-oil can, which compliments the flat tone of the movie. While there is no direct reference to motor oil inNebraska, the plot centers around a Middle-American road trip, a small town, and even a visit to a mechanic’s shop by the main characters, Woody (Bruce Dern) and David (Will Forte).”

Wolf Of Wall Street 520x783 Oscar pop! A pop art spin on the 2014 Academy Award nominees

The Wolf of Wall Street by Jordan Roland

“For me, Pop Art is as much about the bold, simple message it relays as the visual itself. I chose to show The Wolf Of Wall Street for what it represented in a simple, confronting image. Stylistically, I looked to Robert Dowd and the pieces for which he painted currency with either simple alterations — or none at all.”

Dallas Buyers Club 520x803 Oscar pop! A pop art spin on the 2014 Academy Award nominees

Dallas Buyers Club by Adriana Marin

“The silhouettes of pill bottles with a skull and crossbones represent the ineffective and eventually toxic drugs used during clinical trials for HIV treatment; they’re contrasted by neon colors inspired by Jared Leto’s vivacious portrayal of Rayon and Matthew McConaughey’s equal gusto as Ron Woodroof. The final bottle represents the illegal but live-saving drugs that Woodroof was smuggling in from Mexico, which not only helped many other HIV-positive patients, but also extended his own life by several years.”

Captain Phillips 520x778 Oscar pop! A pop art spin on the 2014 Academy Award nominees

Captain Phillips by Rachael Polack

“Paint, overlays, and scrap imagery come together here to represent the complexity and gripping truth behind the story of Captain Phillips. This poster was created in the style of pop artist Robert Rauschenberg, who was a master of textures, ‘combines,’ printmaking, sculpture, and more.”

HER 2 520x780 Oscar pop! A pop art spin on the 2014 Academy Award nominees

Her by Deanna Paquette

“Nodding to Allen Jones‘ obsession with physical relationships, this poster explores sexuality driven by communication. Aesthetically, the colors in Spike Jonze’s unconventional love story are both encompassing and crucial to the storytelling. I used Adobe Kuler to help capture the palette directly from the film and bring it into this design to translate the mood.”

Gravity PopArt Poster 520x780 Oscar pop! A pop art spin on the 2014 Academy Award nominees

Gravity by Lily Ou

“The idea for my Gravity poster was to take a common Pop Art pattern, but replace the dots with stars to set it in space. To give it a humorous twist, I used bananas as missiles, striking and shattering the satellite, sending the hapless astronaut plummeting away.”

12 Years slave 520x780 Oscar pop! A pop art spin on the 2014 Academy Award nominees

12 Years a Slave by Kathy Cho

“I wanted to use vibrant, bold colors in an abstract but simple way, with imagery representing the idea of freedom that is so inherent in this film. When Solomon is abducted and sold into slavery, it’s actually his talent at the violin that makes him a target. His music is often an aid during his imprisonment, but the violin and his chains are inextricably linked. The bird represents finally finding freedom after all the hardship and horror.”

Philomena Poster 2 1 520x780 Oscar pop! A pop art spin on the 2014 Academy Award nominees

Philomena by Philippe Intraligi

“My spin on Philomena is based on the core aesthetic of the film, which plays with memories in the form of Super 8 snippets. Super 8 cameras were among the first mass-marketed consumer tools for capturing people’s lives, and they play into the spirit of Pop Art and readymades. The design of the poster uses film snippets overlapping as a cross, framing the main character and her lost boy. The tree stands for the Tree of Life, playing into the main storyline of the film.”

This business card lets you play Tetris

Technical designer Kevin Bates has done something phenomenal: he has designed and built the Arduboy, an interactive digital business card that lets you play Tetris on an OLED screen. We’re stopping short of calling it a credit-card-sized Game Boy, but the Arduboy is nonetheless very impressive:

The controls are capacitive touch sensors. If you enter the Konami code, the Hack a Day logo pops up and the card starts playing Rick Astley’s Never Gonna Give You Up.

Code 2 520x245 AirPairs network of pay per hour API experts want to make your next integration a doddle

AirPair, the service that allows its users to get technical help from devs on-demand, has launched a new feature designed to take the pain out of integrating APIs from some of the Web’s most popular services.

The new Trusted Partner Community Experts option provides access to people who know exactly what they’re doing when it comes to integrating APIs from the likes of Twilio, Stripe, Tokbox, Balanced, Evernote, Adroll, and a dozen other companies.

AirPair decided to build the API integration feature into a core offering as it found that many of its users were making use of the service specifically to get in touch with experts for API integrations. The partners chosen so far have each selected their own experts from dev communities to help out with user requests, or have otherwise helped to vet experts that were already active on AirPair and capable of providing help.

In short, if you’re in need of API integration advice for any of the listed companies and are willing to pay by the hour to get it, AirPair’s ‘Trusted Partner Community Experts’ are ready and waiting.

Stepsie wants to help you manage projects by breaking them down into digestible chunks

Project Management Stepsie 520x245 Stepsie wants to help you manage projects by breaking them down into digestible chunks

With the likes of Asana, Wrike and countless other tools of a similar ilk, the online project management/productivity space is fairly saturated, so it’s difficult to get overly excited at the prospect of yet another entrant to the space. But Stepsie, a bootstrapped Estonia-based startup run by three Australians and one Italian, recently launched its own take on what a cloud-based project management and collaboration tool is all about.

How it works

One of the core tenets of Stepsie is its simplicity – it is very easy to grasp and doesn’t throw features at you. You simply give the project a name, description, deadline and invite participants by email.

Stepsie lets you create as many ‘steps’ for each project that you like – which may include things like ‘Ideas’ and ‘Prototype’, all the way through to ‘Launch’. This is a little like Asana’s own Subtasks features.

Within each step, you have individual discussions, files (attachments) and tasks related to that element only. This is designed to help you break each project down into clearer, more manageable chunks, and it does collate all this information neatly.

Furthermore, you are able to keep some steps private and restricted to only certain users, which could be particularly useful when working with agencies or third-parties for certain stages of a product launch.

You can sign up for a free 30 day trial, which gives you 200MB of storage. After this, you can pay anything up to $99/month for access – a price that varies accordingly to the amount of storage required, and number of people on the team.

pricing Stepsie wants to help you manage projects by breaking them down into digestible chunksThough it is simple to use, Stepsie may be a little too simple for many teams in terms of the available features. That said, if you’re on the hunt for your company’s first project management tool, then Stepsie is certainly worth your time checking out. If nothing else, it will help you establish what exactly you need from a cloud-based project management tool.

Microsoft details social Office Graph updates coming to Office 365 in 2014

185573209 520x245 Microsoft details social Office Graph updates coming to Office 365 in 2014

Microsoft is building new social features for Office 365 to help people collaborate and communicate with other employees in their company. Called the Office Graph, Microsoft is now able to analyze how its users interact with email, documents, sites and instant messages to create a personalized view of their company network.

It’s based on the Enterprise Graph used in Microsoft’s private social network Yammer and will be adapted for Office 365 through a new, dedicated app codenamed Oslo. It takes the Metro-style design language and builds it around files, updates and people tied to their organizations. Microsoft will be tapping Office Graph to surface information that is relevant to you.

In one screenshot, Microsoft shows a selection of cards and six filters along the top with names such as presented to me, trending around me and modified by me. A second displays a user profile, which lists projects they’re working on and colleagues that both users are currently working alongside.

Microsoft is also bringing across the ‘Groups Experience’ from Yammer which, as the name implies, will allow users to set up a new group from within any Office 365 app. It automatically includes an inbox, social feed, calendar and document library that users can pull from to stay organized and work together with greater efficiency. Changes will also be synced with Yammer so users can pick their preferred platform.

While these groups will be open and discoverable by default, Microsoft stresses that users can also make them private for sensitive projects.

Users will also soon notice a Yammer messenger built into documents stored with SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business. Furthermore, Microsoft says it’ll allow user to share new content to Yammer from SharePoint Online and Outlook and plans to integrate the business-focused social network with its video calling services Lync and Skype at some point in the future.

Microsoft said these updates will become available “throughout 2014″ but refrained from giving any firm release dates.
