Pebble launches Android appstore with new partners apps from eBay, Evernote and Time Warner Cable

A little over a month since it debuted on iOS, Pebble is launching its long-anticipated appstore on Android. As promised, it offers a wealth of Pebble-supported apps and watchfaces with a polished interface that should be simpler and quicker to navigate.

It includes the watchapp directory, which lets you search, discover and install new software for your Pebble or Pebble Steel smartwatch, in addition to a ‘locker’ where you can store and manage your existing apps and watchfaces.

To coincide with the release, Pebble today announced three new app partners: eBay, Evernote and Time Warner Cable. The eBay app lets users review their feeds, discover new products and add them to a ‘Watch List’ for later bidding. Evernote, meanwhile, is a slimmed-down version of its mobile note-taking counterparts with quick access to checklists, reminders and notebooks. If you’re picking up the groceries or want to check you’ve covered everything in a meeting, this should give you the information you need at a quick glance.

Lastly, Time Warner Cable is offering an app that gives its IntelligentHome customers the ability to control their home set up with a Pebble smartwatch.

After Samsung’s unveiling of the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo, Pebble needs to reassure both new and potential customers that it can still offer the best software experience. The Pebble Steel is arguably the best-looking smartwatch on the market, but with new wearables rumored for Apple, Google and Microsoft, it’s promising to see that the smartwatch startup isn’t resting on its laurels.

Artist Spotlight: Chris McVeigh, Lego virtuoso

Chris McVeigh

There is no shortage of Lego obsessives on the planet, but few have made the toy (if you want to call it that) the major focus of their livelihood. Canadian author, illustrator, toy photographer, and Lego kit-creator Chris McVeigh has managed to turn his Lego love into a shared art form.

This preoccupation did not spring up suddenly or out of nowhere. At the age of 12, McVeigh was, by his own account, “sternly dissuaded from buying more toys or engaging in any sort of toy-related activities.” Yet the urge for creative play never really goes away, as McVeigh discovered when he reconnected with toys later in life.

Lifestyle scene as part of an advent calendar series.

“I was a huge fan of Lego as a kid, but my folks were adamant that I set toys aside and ‘grow up.’ It was well over 20 years before I returned to Lego,” McVeigh recalls. But after friends gave him a Star Wars Lego set in a Christmas gift exchange some 10 years ago, “I found myself once again enthralled with Lego…then one day I found that I wasn’t totally happy with an expensive set that I’d bought, so I decided to change it. And that was it. The spark was reignited, and I realized I could build anything I wanted.”

Brand new: The Game Console is available for pre-order.

As an artistic construct, Lego offers some obvious advantages. The little bricks are cooperative, there’s a satisfying feeling when they are pieced together, they don’t balk at posing for the camera, and there are generally abundant parts available. In addition to classic recreations of objects and scenes, McVeigh commemorates some of his favorite original Lego designs with photo portraits.

He also occasionally creates Lego-themed t-shirt designs mostly featuring minifigures.

Minifigure T-shirts and other items are part of McVeigh’s Lego universe.

McVeigh’s craft isn’t just about what you can buy, but what you can make. And McVeigh’s original kits facilitate anyone trying their hand at building their own Lego landscapes, portraits, characters, and objects.

My First Computer featured Earth tones with crisscrossing tiles and plates.

For example, you can now pre-order McVeigh’s newest kit, the 220-piece My First Game Console complete with two classic controllers and two cartridges. These kinds of mini computer models have proven extremely popular over time—witness the sold out status of My First Computer, which kind of looks like an Apple IIe.

But hey, tech isn’t the only Lego game in town. McVeigh has created kits for cameras, rotary telephones, brick sketch portraits of famous cartoon characters, old fashioned TV sets complete with rabbit ear antennas (one of McVeigh’s personal favorites), butter cream birthday cake slices complete with candle, and more. Another new entry, Peculiar Police Box, resembles an old telephone booth.

Each kit ships with PDF step-by-step instructions, but McVeigh emphasizes that anyone can download those instruction for free, even without buying a kit from him.

Let them build cake

“I give people the choice of whether or not to buy the brick set from me,” McVeigh says. “Some people know what they’re doing and they’re happy to go off and find the bricks on their own, and that’s just fine. Others want to buy the brick sets from me to show their support. But buying the brick sets from me is never a requisite to access the building guides.”

Each model is carefully crafted for maximum aesthetic enjoyment. “I work as hard designing the inside of a model as I do the outside. Colors are chosen very carefully, and bricks are laid out in a manner that makes them both fun to assemble and visually appealing,” McVeigh says.

As a result, these Lego models have started to attract attention from unlikely admirers outside of the hobby set. Last Easter, he created a cream filled egg model as a prop for a holiday themed photo. Recently, Cadbury UK discovered it and asked his permission to share it.

Cadbury UK got a kick out of this Easter-themed creme egg.

“The response to it was incredible, and within hours I’d gotten dozens of requests for a building guide. The original Lego Creme Egg was something I’d thrown together for a pic, and in order to make it ready for public consumption, I actually had to rework it slightly. I also made sure it was compatible with the bricks currently available from Lego’s Pick a Brick service so that people could order the parts for the kit if necessary.”

McVeigh does not sell a specific kit for the creme egg, however.

Point and shoot

McVeigh’s entire portfolio of current and upcoming Lego kits is available on his website. You can also view McVeigh’s full photo portfolio on Flickr. Photo prints, a vast variety of T-shirts and hoodies and onesies, mobile device cases and laptop skins, wall clocks, throw pillows, greeting cards, calendars, and more—can be found at Society6 and RedBubble.

Facebook launches Public Content Solutions program to help media partners use its APIs for public events

Posted In: Around the Web, Social Media

Facebook today launched the Public Content Solutions (PCS) program to provide dedicated technical and business resources to media partners building on top of Facebook and Instagram. The company is starting off with supporting its Keyword Insights API and Public Feed API, both of which help companies leverage the massive amounts of data and content associated with public events.

Facebook promises it will grow the program over time to include more APIs, tools, and support resources for the media industry. For now though, partners will receive a badge for display on their sites, as well as marketing materials, dedicated technical support from the PCS team, and access to Facebook’s Media Partnerships team.

Initial partners in the PCS program include Arktan, telescope, never.no, Timeline Labs, Tagboard, Vizrt, Reality Check, and SnappyTV. More partners will be added in due time. Meanwhile, Facebook is asking for interested developers “building compelling, high impact solutions for media companies” to shoot the company an email.

Google+ for iOS gets Community post pinning, What’s Hot topics and granular location settings

googleplus2 786x305 520x245 Google+ for iOS gets Community post pinning, Whats Hot topics and granular location settings

Google has made a whole host of tweaks to the browser-based version of Google+ recently, so it should come as no surprise that some of those improvements have now been patched into the iOS app.

First on the list is pinning, which allows moderators to lock a single post to the top of a Community stream. Once you’ve selected a post and tapped on the settings icon in the top right-hand corner, you’ll now see a ‘Pin it’ option at the bottom. Only a few days ago, Google introduced this feature on the Web and it allows administrators and Community creators to highlight important posts.

The revamped ‘Explore’ experience that was unveiled last December is also being integrated into the Google+ for iOS app. While it doesn’t have that moniker just yet, all of the same hash-tags can now be accessed from the What’s Hot section. Just tap the drop-down arrow at the top of your current stream, and the What’s Hot option should be sandwiched in between All and Nearby. Once selected, you should be able to see the new area right at the top of the feed.

Location-sharing is a fairly unique aspect of Google+ and in today’s update, Google has added some new settings to give you more precise control over exactly what (and to whom) you’re sharing. After selecting the Locations option from the menu, hit the cog icon and you’ll be given a new option labeled ‘Location Reporting & History’. Here, you can choose whether you want Google to use your location data or leverage it for any other services.

Although it isn’t noted in today’s change log, you might notice that a new icon has also been placed at the top of the main stream. It shows an outline of two people and, not surprisingly, will give you some a list of suggestions for people who you may already know on Google+.
