The color wheel has nothing on Prism, a new iPhone app that lets you roll your own photo filter combos based on the colors in your original shot. There are plenty of photo filter apps for the iPhone—more than enough by any objective measure. But I’d argue that such image enhancements—which often sport names like Holga, Toy Camera, or simply a year from the past century—have been partly responsible for the depth and variety of the bustling iPhoneography scene. Lots of photographers eschew filters, but they do serve a creative purpose. And that’s why a mysterious newcomer called Prism from…

typewriter storytelling
Paul Jarvis is a Web designer and bestselling author, who’s obsessed with nature and hairless rats. His latest book, Everything I Know, is a guide to freelancing as a creative professional. My favourite activity while I lived in Tofino, BC was attending my artist friend, Roy Henry Vickers’ storytellings. His art gallery is a large room, set mostly in cedar, with an inset middle area where people can sit at several levels and listen. Roy Henry is First-Nations, so his culture is one of passing information to the next generation through story. And he does it well. So well, that the handful…

Have you ever wondered how it would feel like to swap bodies with your friend? Now you don’t have to wonder anymore. The second-generation Kinect sensor for Windows is powerful enough to let you trade faces: The project comes from Apache, and in the video description the team notes an important caveat: “As the Kinect doesn’t track head rotation it means that both users need to be looking in the same direction for the illusion to work best.” Still, we can imagine many use cases for this technology, such as the Kinect capturing multiple faces in real time and putting…

E3 Gaming And Technology Conference Begins In L.A.
The Xbox One has already received a few firmware updates and it would seem the PlayStation 4 is about to follow suit. Sony today detailed an upcoming patch for its new console that will allow players to turn HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) off at any time. At the moment, this protection means that players can’t record footage using an external capture device. They can stream a session with Twitch or distribute a short clip with the Share button, but vloggers and video producers couldn’t record and edit longer gameplay sessions. Once the update lands this will no longer be…

Oculus VR today revealed a new version of its Oculus Rift virtual reality headset for developers. Referred to as the DK2, it’s based on the Crystal Cove prototype shown off at the CES trade show earlier this year. It has two high-definition, 960×1080 displays that cover your eyes and reduce the “screen-door” found in previous models. These are low-persistence, OLED screens that, like the Crystal Cove, should reduce motion blur and unnatural movements, while also raising the clarity, color and contrast. Each unit also comes with an external camera for positional head tracking. It’s a crucial peripheral, as it allows the…
