The OpenSSL project has just disclosed a devastating security flaw in the protocol that could expose the cryptographic keys and private communications from some of the most important sites and services on the Internet. If you’re running a server with OpenSSL 1.0.1 through 1.0.1f, it’s vital that you update to OpenSSL 1.0.1g immediately. Installations of OpenSSL prior to version 1.0.1 are unaffected by the bug, but OpenSSL 1.0.2-beta users will need to address it. Heartbleed.com has a detailed explanation of the issue, which is related to the “heartbeat” section of OpenSSL’s transport layer security (TSL) protocols and has been in the…

While Uber has quickly become one of the easiest ways for us to get where we need to go, the company now wants to help get things to you. It just announced UberRUSH, an experimental bicycle delivery service that is launching first with limited availability in Manhattan. Deliveries will start at a flat fee of $15, with additional charges based on zoning. Thankfully, UberRUSH doesn’t have surge pricing (yet). In addition to bikes, couriers will also use the subway to get around. The service is primarily available from 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday. Unlike some competing services, couriers will not purchase the items…

Tonx, a startup working on a subscription model for coffee beans, has just announced an acquisition deal from Blue Bottle Coffee. The company wrote in a blog post that it had reached a point where a dedicated production facility was in order, but it required either a partner or venture capital to finance it. Co-founder Tony Konecny noted: With Blue Bottle, we have found a more established company that still has an innovative startup culture, continues to evolve, and is dedicated to improving people’s experience of coffee on an ambitious scale. And they have resources we could only dream of. In…

data business meeting
Marius Moscovici is the founder and CEO of Metric Insights. After landing a $200 million credit line and acquiring music data platform The Echo Nest, Spotify is widely expected to announce its IPO in coming months. Spotify is a unique spin on the same fundamental formula that generated value for Netflix, Amazon, Groupon, Pandora and LinkedIn before it. So what exactly is this magic formula? It’s simple, really: When a company uses data to personalize its inventory, it creates a better UX. This UX in turn draws in millions of users and investment dollars. What’s the lesson startups can derive here? Value…
