Yelp stepped into Asia when it launched in Singapore back in September 2012 and now, nearly a year and a half later, it is finally expanding its presence in the continent after going live in Japan. The move — first reported by Tech In Asia — takes Yelp to 26 countries worldwide. Perhaps most importantly however, it puts the company in one of the world’s most advanced mobile markets, since Japan overtook the US on global mobile app spending last year. Yelp says it will initially focus its efforts on Tokyo and Osaka, and grow outwards from there. As part…

xiaomi 9
Popular Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi inspires the fierce loyalty of many fans — to call it a ‘cult of Xiaomi’ isn’t really that far-fetched when you witness the massive turnout of fans at their events, some of whom travel all the way from other parts of China into Beijing where Xiaomi’s events are typically held. Xiaomi fans are called ‘Mi Fen’ (米粉 in Chinese). The level of passion in these people is amazing. When I attended Xiaomi’s launch event for its Mi-3 Android phone and a 3D smart TV last year, security guards had to come out in full force for crowd control. It was pretty…

Monitoring blood sugar-related illnesses can be an ongoing challenge, but diabetes management platform Dario has today announced a deal with nutritional data provider FatSecret designed to make the process a little easier. The result of the new partnership is integration of FatSecret’s nutritional information platform within Dario, allowing users to more easily track and manage food intake and the effect on their blood insulin and glucose levels. Dario users in the UK, Italy and New Zealand can use the integrated FatSecret data feature straight away. LabSyle Innovations, the company behind Dario, says it’s still looking to expand the service to other European…

Tastebuds for iPhone helps you date people based on a shared taste in music

Feat
Launched four years ago, Tastebuds is a relative veteran of the London tech scene, offering what we previously noted was Last.fm-powered dating for music fans. The principle behind Tastebuds was always simple: If you’re an avid music fan you probably want to date people who share your taste in bands. And by digging into Last.fm’s API, Tastebuds promised to make finding that special person a little bit easier. Although Tastebuds has extended its scope to the broader social realm, it’s clear that online dating still plays a crucial part in the service. And last year the company raised a $600,000…

Get slick stats on how you use the Web with this browser plugin

Usingcomputer
Most people spend a fair amount of their lives online nowadays. But exactly how much of the Web do you browse  in, say, a week? I’d have no real idea, if I had to guess. Thankfully, I don’t have to guess and nor do you. Instead, you can just point your browser at Surfkoll.se and install Nackademin‘s ‘Internet Selfie’ plugin for Chrome and Firefox. Once installed, you’ll need to visit the Surfkoll page again and start analyzing your internet history – it only takes the last seven days into account though, and this time period isn’t adjustable. First, it will show you…
