Twitter Goes Public On The New York Stock Exchange
2013 was a year of changes for Twitter, and one of the key themes that surfaced was how the company would fend off the challenges brought about by the rapid growth of messaging apps. After all, given that Twitter is best known as a place for conversations to happen, making it convenient for people to carry on public chats in private is a natural progression. Shailesh Rao, Twitter’s vice president for Asia Pacific and Latin America, tells TNW in a recent interview that the main value proposition of Twitter is that it’s a “live, public and conversational platform,” but within the…

Vevo and Yahoo have long been friends — the two companies have had an agreement in place since 2012 to syndicate Vevo’s programming to Yahoo Music — but the pair has announced an extended partnership that will see its video content available via Yahoo Screen from today. As a result, if you do happen to be a Yahoo Screen user living in the US or Canada, you can now access Vevo’s HD music content, live streaming events and other original content, Vevo said in a blog post today. We already knew that the integration was on the way, but it’s good to…

BBC Sport mobile app now serves up push notifications for football results and goals

A little more than year after the BBC first launched its dedicated mobile sports app, the broadcaster has finally introduced push notifications for your favorite football (soccer) teams. With the updated Android and iOS apps, you can now be notified when your team kicks off in a game, when a goal is scored, and the half-time/full-time results. It’s compatible with pretty much all the professional football teams in England and Scotland.     Similar functionality is already available in apps like OneFootball, but it’s great to see alerts finally arrive for BBC Sport too. There’s no reason why this functionality can’t…

SHIFT adds a self-service Twitter tool with tailored audiences to its social marketing platform

shift
SHIFT, a cloud-based social media marketing service, has officially launched its new self-service tool for advertising on Twitter. The new version offers all the features of Twitter’s ads API while also adding more granular tailored audiences and an easier way for global teams to coordinate their efforts. Previously, SHIFT’s product bundled together Facebook and Twitter advertising into a single tab on its SaaS solution. However, the startup found that its clients wanted to take separate approaches to each network. While advertisers can always head directly to Twitter to set up their ads, SHIFT’s platform offers several advantages. It allows individuals from multiple…

The Guardian is set to launch a free paper in the US that uses an algorithm to choose content

Apr14

Posted In: Around the Web, Insider, Product Updates

British newspaper The Guardian is set to take its automated content curation experiment started in December in the UK to the US,  as reported by digital media and advertising company DigiDay and confirmed to TNW. Rather than using human editors to select which stories make it into the paper, called #Open001, The Guardian will use its own proprietary algorithm to identify its most popular long reads based on social metrics, likes shares and tweets. The paper will start with a monthly print run of 5,000 issues, which will be distributed for free at media and ad agencies in the US. It’s…
