My_com
Russian Internet giant Mail.ru Group‘s US-focused spin-off My.com is launching a slightly puzzling new feature today – mobile-only email addresses. Just like the approach taken by many mobile messaging apps, these new email addresses are activated by being linked to your phone number. You can use the same SMS activation code on multiple devices (for example a secondary tablet device), although if you change phone numbers, you’ll need a new email address. What’s more, the addresses exclusively work with My.com’s own MyMail app for iOS and Android. So, given these limitations, why might you want, an ‘@my.com’ email address? Well the ability to…

Those looking for alternative browsers on their iPhone now have another option: Opera’s Coast app, a gesture-heavy browser which it first introduced on the iPad. Coast features a dark, minimalistic look with a strong focus on tiles. This means that instead of having to type in a URL every time you want to access a site, you can just tap on tiles. When you’re in a site and want to exit it, all you have to do is tap on the ‘home’ button, while to access the sites you already have open, just tap on the bottom right. As Opera notes: “The…

Nimbuzz
Nimbuzz, the mobile messaging service headquartered in India, is taking another big step into the telecom space after it announced a partnership with LG. The deal will see its app pre-installed on the Korean phone-maker’s devices alongside 100 minutes of free international calls for all users. Nimbuzz waded into calling last October, when it secured a license to offer paid-for call services in India, something that even Skype doesn’t have and can’t do there. The partnership will initially cover LG’s new mid-range L-Series smartphones in India, but it will expand to other LG devices, other phone-makers and other markets too, according to…

Many of us live tweet while watching our favorite TV shows. Twitter is hoping to capitalize on that engagement with a broader roll-out of its ‘TV conversation targeting’ tool, which allows networks and brands to target viewers with Promoted Tweets. Starting today, the advertising tool will support Twitter users in Brazil, Canada, France and Spain. So when locals tune into the 2014 FIFA World Cup this summer, for example, Twitter advertisers will be able to reach them and ultimately sell products with coordinated tweets. TV conversation targeting was launched in the US and UK last November; Twitter says it’s now…

microsoft-ventures
We wrapped up our first morning of keynotes at TNW Europe 2014 with a talk from Microsoft Ventures GM Rahul Sood. Here are his five main tips for entrepreneurs and startups: 1. Think about what motivates you as an entrepreneur Sood frequently asked himself what motivated him as an entrepreneur when he was building VoodooPC as a teenager, and it’s a question that he poses to startups now in his work with Microsoft Ventures. Oh, and money doesn’t count as enough of a motivation. 2. Figure out the one thing you want to nail Startups need to focus on excelling in…
