Cells, pods, and squads: The future of organizations is small

This post originally appeared on the iDoneThis blog. Think small and you will achieve big things. That’s the Yoda-esque, counterintuitive philosophy that nets Finnish game company Supercell revenues of millions of dollars a day. So really, how do you build a billion-dollar business by thinking small? One key is the company’s supercell organizational model. Autonomous teams, or “cells,” of four to six people position the company to be nimble and innovative. Similar modules — call them squads, pods, cells, startups within startups — are the basic components in many other nimble, growing companies, including Spotify and Automattic. The future, as Dave Gray argues in The…

Coinbase acquires YC-backed collaborative bookmarking startup Kippt ‘to make Bitcoin easy to use’

Bitcoin exchange Coinbase announced today that it has acquired the team behind social bookmarking service Kippt and Inc, its business messaging product. Coinbase and Kippt were both part of the same Y Combinator class in 2012. Kippt, however, failed to reach the scale it needed for sustainability, so its founders Jori Lallo and Karri Saarinen have decided to throw their weight behind Coinbase to help make Bitcoin “easy to use” for consumers, merchants and developers. For now, Kippt plans to keep both services running, though it will discontinue its premium plans. Lallo and Saarinen will operate Inc as a “side project.”…

Chromebooks seem to be getting a foothold where the netbook failed. At the Chromebook event today, Intel introduced a bevy of notebooks from its partners, powered by Google’s Chrome operating system. With the PC market dwindling, Intel is keen to expand its portfolio. By jumping on the growing Chromebook market it can keep doing what it does best–making silicon–while partnering with Google and its emerging OS. At today’s event Dell and Acer also announced 4th generation Core i3 processor Chromebooks. With additional announcements from Asus and Lenovo, the chip maker was also able to keep its promise to create conflict-free…

appnet
App.net today revealed the results from its first major round of subscription renewals a few weeks ago, which coincide with a year after the original launch of the Twitter alternative. The renewal rate was high enough for App.net to be “profitable and self-sustaining on a forward basis,” meaning the revenue covered operational and hosting costs. As such, there will be no changes to the API or the service: “App.net will continue to operate normally…
