Accessibility needs to be at the forefront of tech — here’s why

In March 2019 IKEA was praised for partnering with nonprofits to develop accessories that make its products more accessible for people with impairments. It’s a novel step forward but I can’t shake the feeling we need to reframe the conversation on accessibility in technology entirely. Accessibility should be a topic at the forefront of design. Here’s why: Roughly one in five people in the US have registered with a disability, with a similar figure for the UK. But when creating new products or services, investing resources to make technology accessible for impaired users can seem like taking the scenic route…

CHEAP: Get $300 off this Dell Inspiron 15 7000

If you’re looking for a graduation present for someone close to you, or you are merely in the market for a new laptop, you could do worse than checking out this Dell Inspiron 15 7000, which is currently on sale for $600 using the code DBLTKYLAFF2. That’s a whole $299.99 lower than the usual asking price of $899.99. And the thing is, it’s actually a pretty decent machine. While it’s not quite capable of playing the latest AAA video game blockbuster at full whack, for typical day-to-day computing tasks, I can’t fault it. At the heart is an Intel Core i-8265U…

Even thought it’s 2019, initial coin offering (ICO) exit scams are still being uncovered. The latest to surface has seemingly conned over $8 million from would-be investors. It appears that blockchain startups RepuX and JoyToken have conned investors out of $4.7 million and $3.3 million, respectively. An investigation by Hard Fork revealed that their UK offices were dissolved earlier this week, as confirmed by Companies House, the registrar of UK-based companies. RepuX claimed that it was trying to build what it called a “blockchain-powered data marketplace,” while JoyToken was trying to create a decentralized gambling platform, powered by its own…

Last week’s TNW Conference featured an amazing lineup of speakers, all sharing their unique knowledge and insights into the future of tech. A prominent theme this year was machine learning and artificial intelligence — namely, how industries can harness its power. Stacia Carr, Director of Engineering at Zalando, gave an inspiring keynote about how she integrates this tech into her work. As the fashion industry moves more and more online, customers want to know if the clothes they’re ordering will fit. Together with her team, Carr uses machine learning to make intelligent predictions on variations in size across the industry. We…

In our ongoing series, High Contrast, we’re looking at how assistive technology can help people with disabilities overcome challenges in their lives, and the pioneers innovating in solutions to make everyday tools more accessible. Technology is increasingly improving our lives by conveniently tackling menial tasks – and it’s also helping people with disabilities lead more independent lives and improve their skill sets. With this in mind, and in celebration of Global Accessibility Awareness Day, here’s a look at some of the most innovative apps and solutions helping people with visual impairment today. Facebook’s AI-captioned photographs Back in April 2016, Facebook introduced…
