Everyone knows online TV consumption is on the rise, as this is by no means a surprising trend. Yet it turns out the latest increases are still quite high: in Q1 2014 the US market saw a jump of 246 percent year-over-year. iOS apps managed to grab 43 percent market share, taking top spot as the leading access point for watching TV online. Browsers fell behind with a 36 percent share (compared to 47 percent a year ago) while Android apps garnered 15 percent. Game consoles and over-the-top devices took the remaining 6 percent. iOS apps dominated children’s content at…

Video game creators will be pleased to hear that the WebGL PlayCanvas Engine has been open-sourced. Mozilla announced the move today on its developer blog and you can access the entire engine sourcebase right now over on GitHub. The engine includes a full Javascript library tailored for video game development, with implementations for various graphics, physics, animation and audio-related components. The combination of HTML5 and WebGL makes it a popular choice for building 3D games that run in the browser and on mobile. To get an idea of the engine’s capabilities, be sure to check out the rather impressive Swooop video game…

Programming through play: Why teaching kids to code will change how the rest of us code

Raj Sidhu is a designer, Web developer, and creator of Code Monkey Island, a board game that introduces kids to programming fundamentals. I felt pretty jealous as I walked into the computer room of the elementary school I was visiting. The hulking PCs of my youth – with their giant floppy disk drives and 8-bit copies of Oregon Trail – were nowhere to be seen. Instead, children were happily tapping away at Photoshop and playing Web games on pristine, wafer-thin iMacs. I had come to the school to have a group of kids play-test Code Monkey Island – a board game I had designed…

Preggie is a new social network  for expectant mums. The currently iPhone-only app (Android coming soon) is designed as a platform for mums-to-be to discuss all things related to, well, pregnancy and babies. In your personal profile, you indicate what stage of the pregnancy you’re at too, which should go some way towards connecting you with the most suitable online buddies….
