Echelon-2014
Making it fun for kids to learn is something that holds a lot of potential for mobile startups, and that direction is now further affirmed in Southeast Asia with Thai startup Taamkru winning the “Most Promising Startup” award at tech conference Echelon 2014. Taamkru, which was motivated by a sense of shame that Thailand ranked near the bottom for education among ASEAN countries, aims to replace the paper workbook for preschool kids. Its iOS app features digital interactive exercises focused on fun and can be replayed over and over again. This video highlights aptly the sense of the fun culture behind Taamkru. Although Taamkru currently…

Google Announces Quarterly Earnings
At DockerCon 2014 today, Eric Brewer, Google’s VP of Infrastructure, announced the company is adding support for Docker images in Google App Engine. He also unveiled two new open source projects: Kubernetes, a container manager, and cAdvisor, a resource usage tool. When Google Compute Engine hit general availability late last year, the company announced support for Docker, which lets developers build and test an application locally and package everything into a large executable that can then be run anywhere. The company is now taking that one step further by offering a set of extensions that allow App Engine developers to…

At Tuesday’s E3 presentation, Nintendo showed off the next game in its venerable The Legend of Zelda series. The trailer showed off a new art style with updated visuals, as the first HD title in the series. Nintendo’s Eiji Aonuma talked about how they were able to use the Wii U’s processing power to create a vast, interconnected world, the likes of which they couldn’t in past systems. Unlike most previous titles in the series, this should allow for a less…
