An Australian government employee is appearing in court today after using work equipment to mine cryptocurrency for his own gain. The Australian Federal Police (AFP) allege that the 33 year-old from Killara in New South Wales took advantage of his position as an IT contractor to modify government computer systems to mine cryptocurrency. The man’s illicit mining operation is said to have earned him more than AU$9,000 ($6,000), according to an AFP announcement. The unnamed man is facing two charges: unauthorized modification of data to cause impairment, and unauthorized modification of restricted data. These charges carry maximum penalties of 10…

Nobody is immune to SIM-swapping attacks – and one engineering lead at a cryptocurrency security startup had to learn this lesson the hard way. In a blog post, Sean Coonce, engineering manager at security-oriented cryptocurrency startup BitGo, has detailed how he lost $100,000 in an unfortunate SIM-swapping hack, which saw his entire Coinbase balance drained. It all began on a Tuesday night, when Coonce noticed that his phone didn’t have any cellular service. Moments later, he received a notification that someone is trying to log into his Google Account. He tried entering his password to no avail; ultimately, he decided…

The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is still not keen on approving Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETF). In a document published on May 20, the watchdog revealed it has delayed making a decision on an ETF proposal put forth by the VanEck SolidX Bitcoin Trust. Instead, the SEC “is instituting proceedings” to determine whether it should approve the filing. For the record, such institution of proceedings does not “indicate” the commission has “reached any conclusions.” Rather, it’s simply a call for more input from interested parties. “Interested persons are invited to submit written data, views, and arguments regarding whether the proposal…

British investors lost £27 million ($34.38 million) to cryptocurrency scams over the last financial year, according to one of the UK’s financial regulators. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) reports that between April 1, 2018 and April 1, 2019 the average loss per victim was £14,600 ($18,500). Reports of cryptocurrency scams also tripled over the same period. While last year there were X cases reported, the FCA notes the number has gone up to 1,800 this year. The FCA’s announcement states that fraudsters often used social media to promote “get-rich-quick” schemes. The FCA’s description of how these scammers rip off their victims…

Microsoft has officially announced a preview of its Microsoft Edge browser for the macOS. Microsoft originally unveiled plans for the browser at its annual BUILD developers conference held on May 6. The browser is based on Google’s open-source Chromium rendering engine, which also powers other popular browsers like Chrome, Brave, Opera, and Vivaldi, among others. The interface will be a lot familiar if you already use Google Chrome. It means you can install Chrome extensions on Edge to augment your browser’s capabilities. Microsoft has also added privacy features that allow you to choose between varying levels of tracking protection. Then…
